  1. For anyone interested - https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/300539-giant-toughroad-with-upgrades-bargain/
  2. Planning on riding at Jonkershoek tomorrow morning for the first time. Does anyone have a decent gpx file for me for a 20-30km ride? Will have my better half with me so trying to keep it to a 90mins-2hr ride if possible. Any recommendations of trials/sections to hit there (+/-blue level)? Is it well sign-posted? Thanks in advance!

  5. Dmr vault would be first choice. Otherwise the neutrons are great and feel very light and grippy.

  9. My new n+1: Giant toughroad, Easton carbon bar, arch ex's on hope 4, XT groupo. Weighing in at around 10kg after upgrades. Loving this bike.
  10. So I recently purchased a Giant Toughroad Slr 2 as a road/pavement/fitness bike (riding up long tar climbs on my enduro rig was starting to become tedious). I'm really enjoying it and and am keen to upgrade it and drop some weight where possible to get it in shape for a few road races. The out the box specs: (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/toughroad.slr.2/22192/84013/) - decent frame and fork, not sure about the wheelset, crappy groupset. I had a pair of xt pedals, carbon bar and stem in my garage which I have put on it so far. I wouldn't like to spend more than about R7k on upgrades so at that price I'm basically looking at either upgrading wheels (ztr arch/crest on hope 4's) or groupset (full xt, including brakes, cranks etc). Question: At basically the same price, what would you do, wheelset or groupset?
  11. Wonder how long it will take you to convince yourself you need a pike on that bike
  12. I've got my bike down here but car and hike rack only coming down in a couple days, are there any trails near seapoint within rideable distance?
  13. So I enjoy an occasional punt on soccer/tennis etc through the online sites but I can't seem to find a single site that offers markets on UCI downhill events, which is strange considering the huge variety of other sports avl, from local mma to darts and even politics. Almost all sites offer markets on road races and tour De France. Anyone have any thoughts on why?
  14. Some advice please: If I'm running a 1x10 setup,XT cranks with a Hope n/w chainring, what's the cheapest way to upgrade to 11 speed (with a non-xd driver)? I'm assuming a new 11x chain, RD, and shifters? Would my existing crank + chainring be ok? Would XT or NX both be compatible?

  16. I had the 120 for 6 months and am now on the Pascoe. They are both extremely versatile and the use of either completely depends on the build. Stick some 2.4 tyres, wide rims, short stem/long bar and a 140mm pike on the 120 and you have a very capable trail/enduro rig. Fit it with 2.2's, a revelation and a carbon cockpit and you have a very capable stage race bike. The Pascoe is more an out and out trail bike and there is a noticeably "lag" when putting the power down out of corners compared to the 120, and you do feel ever so slightly more disconnected from the trail due to the increased travel. That may be a pro or con though depending on how rough/rocky the trail is and how you like to ride. On technical/rocky descends the Pascoe shines and the monarch plus/pike combo means you can take straight lines through rock gardens and less finesse is needed on technical sections than with a 120/revelation setup. I found the 120 to be slightly short on travel at the rear, especially with a progressive shock tune. Bottom line, you'll be happy with either and can set them up differently each month depending on whether you'll be bombing black runs or doing joburg 2c.
  17. In my opinion there's no point splurging on a carbon frame when the rest of the spec is sub par. For your price range rather go with a good alu frame and higher level parts, especially if - as you said - you do not intend upgrading anytime soon. Good wheelset is more nb than a carbon frame, if I was you I would look at the giant anthem + or alu trance or similar for around 30k and add a giant dropper for 2k and good wheelset and maybe carbon bars with the balance of 8k. 140mm travel for stage races is a bit excessive and the trance climbs well but is definitely not a cross country bike with the 67deg head angle and is more of a sit and grind type of bike. I reckon 120mm is your sweetspot. Most bike companies are now moving towards different wheel sizes for different model sizes (i.e 29er for L or Xl and 27.5 for M and S) so maybe let your height be determining factor on that front.
  18. Anyone know what trails are open around jhb/pta tomorrow (obviously other than the spruit). Red barn? Thaba?
  19. I'm running a xt medium cage, 11-42 with 34 up front - no problems.
  20. Hahaha amazing. Cool man will think about it and drop you a message later
  21. Will think about it and pm you later, it's red though not sure how well it will go with your reign...
  22. Currently running a 35mm stem and 760mm bars, due to the very short stem I run all spacers under it so I'm struggling to get enough weight on the front end for climbing (obviously). I guess it's a trade off as manualling/wheelies/drops are easier with short stem and stack height, as your weight is so far back. May need to change to a 50mm stem and slightly lower stack height to get a more balanced feel...
