  1. I've had a set-up with cyclefit 2 times (MTB) and I was each time pleased by the result and professional attitude. I would recommend it.
  2. Can't say anything about other clubs as I am a JMBC member. You can join the club for any sunday morning ride as a guest (R30 fee). No obligation of joining the club, you can try a few times and decide if you like it. Good variety of rides. 4 groups to suit your speed/fitness/skills. Calendar on the website: http://www.jmbc.org.za
  3. Hi guys, I got myself a spinning bike for home training (that's gonna be my only option soon because a baby's on it's way...). I got some training DVDs (real life videos of popular training rides) but I found out that I can do a much better workout simply watching a movie ... Any tips for visual supports that keeps you enternained and push you through the training session? thanks for you feedback.
  4. Hi, a common calculation for max heart rate is MaxHR = 220 - age. But it can vary from one guy to an other. That would give a value of 192 for you ( you're 28 correct?). So you've reached 186 on a hill? 95% of your max HR, that seems highly possible and it looks that there's nothing to worry about. I bought a heart rate monitor a few month ago and I'm still learning to use it. You'll learn soon what Max heart rate you can reach and how long you can keep on riding at a certain heart rate without killing yourself.
  5. If I were you I would sell the trek for maybe, R3000, and then spend the R10000 on a good 2nd hand bargain, you should be able to find something very decent that would be a HUGE upgrade, even a full suspension one...
  6. Personnally I ride a mountain king 2.2 front. It's fast rolling and grippy, perfect for marathons, and works well in wet/muddy conditions as well.
  7. Hi guys, After a a transport incident, my brand new trek mtb has got a very ugly scratch (the size of a R5 coin) on the side of the top tube. Has anybody had to deal with a paint job before? any specialised company to recommend (JHB area)? Thanks for your help.
  8. Check your saddle position as well. When the pedals are horizontal, your knee cap (knee in front) must be on a vertical line above the pedal axis. This position is supposed to be the more efficient.
  9. desperate bump as weekend is coming...
  10. Hi, Just had a bad experience on the hub. The guy sells a saddle on the hub and leaves his cellphone number, I call him as fast as I can, he tells me the saddle is still for sale, we agree to meet at his work place the following day to make the deal, he gives me the adress and everything. Then a few hours later I receive a SMS: " Sorry I have sold the saddle to a friend". Come on hubbers, please behave when you sell something on the hub. When you agree to sell something to somebody, just stick to it, otherwise it gets really annoying...
  11. bump
  12. Hi guys, I will be in Parys this weekend and I would be keen to join some local Mtbers for a ride. I'm training for the Sabie experience at the moment so i'm looking for for a medium/fast pace long ride (+50kms), the more hills the better, but any nice ride will do! I've heard about a " Parys MTB club", anyone has heard about them? Please answer or PM me. Thanks
  13. And what's happening if on a "a easy sunday afternoon ride (off-road, slow pace, well within my technical ability and on trails that I know by heart)" , a dog suddenly jumps out of nowhere and surprises you without your helmet and you unfortunately crash? my point: you'll never know when you actually need your helmet boet!
  14. It just happenned suddenly one day? It happenned to me once, the bike shop had changed the free wheel body and "overtightened" the cones that keep the whole assembly together. For your problem, it looks like your free wheel body or the bearings are dead and offers some resistance, that's why you only notice it pedalling backwards.
  15. Hi there, It happened to my riding partner as well. Tried 32GI on a race day as he had forgotten his cytomax at home and started taking a lot of gels...it seems he spent one of his worst day on the saddle. The main advantage of 32GI is to provide a sustained energy without the spike and drop effect of a "high GI" product. Having a high GI gel at the same time as 32GI will spike your blood sugar then drop and it's possible to "hit the wall". I've been using 32GI for one month and I have to said I achieved some of my best results ever, so it works for me, but I race only on that + low GI snacks if needed. Now, think about that: on a 3 hours, race, I burn around 3000 Cal, and have two bottles of 32GI (378 Cal). The rest of the energy is provided by breakfast, previous day pasta dinner etc...so to me:, nutrition before the race is far more important than energy drink...
  16. Hi hubbers, After 1 year and a half on my good old hardtail, I've got my eye on the 2011 TREK FUEL EX 8 OR 9. These models seem to be close to the 2010 models, but it's ten speed for the new range. Has anybody got any feedback on these bikes? Do you own one and how is the ride? Pros and cons? I think about a specialized stumpjumper FSR as well (model without brain, I've got one thanks). Thanks to share your experience!
  17. Hi guys, Will do the Sabie experience for the first time in december and was told we should expect extremely rainy/muddy conditions. I actually ride with conti 2.2 mountain king front and 2.2 race king at the back, which worked fine at last rainy sani2C this year. I have also a spare mountain king that i was told I could put at the back for wet conditions, but is it necessary/efficient? My riding partner rides with specialized captains. Anybody has feedback on Sabie experience conditions and could give advice about these two tyres combos? will they do the job? Thanks
  18. I've been using the continental combo tubeless (mountain king 2.2 front and race king 2.2 at the back). I love these tyres, very grippy and fast rolling. I got around 1000kms out of them since the beginning of the year and they still have a decent amount of tread left, no puncture, no loss of pressure and still the original sealant in it...very happy overall. i have even ridden sani2c this year which was very wet and found the combination was pretty good in those conditions as well. I would definitely recommand them. Nevertheless, I am doing the sabie experience in december and was told it was extremely wet and muddy out there...so I'm wondering about the performance of the race king at the back in those conditions...if anyone has some feedback, any advice would be apreciated, thanks!
  19. I recently joined the JMBC and made a few rides with them. Nice guys, they organise a ride nearly every weekend with in a good variety of trails. Usually , they have 4 groups so you can choose according to your level of fitness. Each group is guided by a leader with GPS. http://jmbc.org.za You can join any ride as guest for a R30 fee so it's easy to give them a try without any obligation. You pay something like half the price of the membership from now until the end of the year.
  20. Hi, It's been the same for me since january...so i've started to wonder and did some research on the internet. The answer to your question maybe harsh but simple: you may eat too much, I'm talking about calories, not volume... Here's a website which could help you: http://www.acaloriecalculator.com/ You can calculate the calorie intake you need to maintain your weight, and the recommended calorie intake for weight loss. You should also do some research about calories in your usual food....it's surprising sometimes. for example, a woolworth pasta salad contains as many calories as 2 slices of bread + 1 orange juice + 1 yoghurt + 1 tbl spoon of almond butter (healthy version of peanut butter)...and as many as a large portion of french fries... Here's what I've done to start losing weight: - go on a healthy diet and count calories (you can find the average calories in most common foods on the internet). - try to keep your food as "low GI" as possible and replace most high GI food (sugars, biscuits, snacks, crisps, potatoes, rice, white bread) by their "Low GI" equivalent (xylitol=natural sweetener, agave syrup= natural sweetenr, sweet potatoes, basmati rice, low gi bread: see woolworth or sasko bread, etc...). That way, you don't spike you blood sugar and your food provides sustained energy for longer, it's healthier and makes the diet much easier...you can find lists of low GI food on the internet. - buy a heart rate monitor to calculate the calories burnt during my work outs and therfore check my calories intake. My example: i should take 2000 Calories to maintain my weight. A deficit a 500 Calories should allow me to loose 0.5kg of body fat per week: so I try to take 1500 Cal on rest days and 2000 Cal if i burn 500 calories in training. This may not be easy to do every day so you can average it on one week. And if you burn 3000 cal during a race, well, that's bonus! Then you must train your body to burn fat during exercise and for me, a low GI diet is the way to go. If during races or training you have High GI energy drinks, bars, gels, you spike your blood sugar and use it as a primary source of energy. if you're on a low gi diet, you provide sustained energy to your body and burn more fat. There are new "low GI" bars, snacks and energy drinks available in the market. I can tell you, i've not changed my training routine since january but i've never felt so good and energetic on a bike 9sustained energy=>no need for snacks, gels etc) since i've started the low gi diet, and i start loosing weight! I hope this helps, good luck!
  21. Hi guys! If there are any french mountain bikers around Joburg, give me a shout! I'd like to meet you and why not organize some group rides sometimes. I miss some french swearing next to me when I ride uphill. My e-mail: matthieu.bertin@heurtey.com Cheers.
  22. Hi, I've been trough the "from zero to as much as possible" process 6 month ago. Here's what I did (still doing), and that worked for me. I usually take monday and friday OFF (or saturday if training/racing planned only on sunday. Before and after a long race, I usually take 2 days OFF (let's say friday/sat + monday/tuesday if long race planned on sunday). After the race, I usually swallow a recovery drink and it works as well. have a good training!
  23. Just had a look at the complete bikes price list...nothing impressive there
  24. The guy is Juan Smook, 082 758 00 11, mobilebicycletechnix@yahoo.com. I think about giving him a try as my LBS just messed up with my bike BIG TIME. Apparently he got good feedbacks from some hubbers.
  25. was counting mercury 1,2&3 for one, and sinergy 1&2 for one, as different spec do not make different bike designs for me, still impressive...
