  1. And Yo!anda is riding the Ladies race
  2. I still see the BA380 in the morning floating downwind over Jhb ,but i think they are staring to transition to the Dreamliner, which is lovely aircraft it should be said. But I think its the bottom line ie economy, that is the deciding factor
  3. When it was still part of Spoorweg lol - would have loved to have stuck around, but I had to go.
  4. LWB is the Jet Shop still there? My first job was an appie with SAA, R40 pm
  5. Sun Air MD-80 fleet became OneTime as I remember it, leather seats and all .. too bad that folded as well, i used to be a regular. Didn't Coleman declare a Boeing-only fleet? Then it went to an Airbus-only with the next mogoe (?)
  6. How not to do a cross wind landing (in a A380)
  7. Yes its just the production is ending in 2021, the nail in the coffin was Emirates reducing their order so its no longer economical for airbus to keep the A380 production line open. As the Airbus CEO said recently, the development of this behemoth was perhaps too late - wide body composite twins evolved to be much more economical to operate. Also it was originally optomised for large scale hub-based carriers, and only Emirates really materialised in this regard. it's certainly not an engineering failure and apparently its very agile to fly.
  8. As it has panned out, there is a fundamental disconnect between 'jobs' and functionality / productivity / competence in just about all SOE's, and one can say the rest of the state organisations,
  9. Oxymoron? https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/2019-02-15-cyril-ramaphosa-rules-out--job-cuts-at-eskom/ Cyril Ramaphosa rules out job cuts at Eskom The utility is overstaffed with 27,500 employees
  10. Great aircraft that - and I must say that I really like Dassault's latest, the Rafale, beautiful lines. I see the A380 orders are being cancelled and the production line is expected to close ...its just not economical to operated cf the latest twins.
  11. Thanks for posting but little comfort. And surely that calls for some serious butt kicking - but will it happen in this age of entitlement? Admission of the utter failure of destructive BEE policies? Get the right people to do the job? But is it too late? Thing is a giving out a job is not like giving out a house. You have to be able to do the job,
  12. Although previous rounds of this debilitating nonsense has been around this time of the year - when the coal is 'wet' ffs But sure, there could be an aspect of economic sabotage by those who are benefiting from this current situation. I know the great employees of Jhb City Power wrecked a few substations when their overtime scam was cut.
  13. That's where a UPS comes in: to tied you over for a short period for equipment that needs to stay on
  14. I also sincerely pity anyone trying to run business with these power cuts - I have been there! and paid dearly.
  15. The culture of non-payment is a massive problem. This also links to the culture of entitlement, another more massive massive problem. Then there is capacity to ensure secure and correct metering of power supplied takes place, and the capacity to keep non-payers off the grid, Going by what I see locally, all massive fails. Guy who owns the two houses next door to me (and who works for Jhb Metro) has not paid his bills for 5+ years and gets away with it. I've reported the illegal connections to the correct authorities and him to the anti-corruption squad countess times - what happens? Fook all! Until the state/SOE/Local gov ditches their racist employment policies and stops employing talentless unskilled uneducated people to do the skilled work required, purely for the sake of handing out 'jobs' on the basis of race and cronyism, we are stuffed, I am just waiting for Scottish Independence before I bail.
  16. generally the UPS's ones gets are meant for short runs, like 10-15 mins. The critical thing with Lead Acid batteries is that you really don't want to discharge them too deeply too often. So an Inverter with external batteries is a better idea for standby power - so you can add more if needed. You start off by calculating ur load and work out the size batteries you need from the run time factoring in that you don't want to discharge more that 50% of the stored energy.
  17. 123 .... all together now .... FAIL
  18. Other difference with Turboprops is that the shaft into the reduction gears is not directly connected to the gas turbine, the jet engine it 'blows' against a disk with blades on it which turns the prop. Same with helicopters as well.
  19. Although the differences are its not driven through a reduction gear from, the gas turbine and there is no adjustment of the pitch on the fan in the front, although there might be some exceptions.
  20. If you are interest in jet engines sub to AgentJayZ on the toob https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh57rwk3ySElDpzgCDLh9KA
  21. As LWB, says one advantage to the higher bypass ration engines is that they are much quieter, the chevrons on the tail end of the nacelle that you find on some engines like on the Dreamliner and 747-800, 737 Max make it even quieter These jet engines are a constantly evolving technology and materials science plays big part, even deeper in the engine, including the hot section, new materials and composites are being used (like composite ceramics) - even just a few % in fuel savings means a lot to airlines.
  22. Just for some additional perspective I see there are still quite a few -100's in service elsewhere in the world, one unique feature it has (optional) is a protrusion in the front of the engine intake that blows dust away on landing. Those reverse thrust umbrellas are always a good laugh, but they have stood the test of time.
  23. Creosote is one option = pongs for a while but settles down
  24. Compare the 737 Max to the ole -100 fluffy Still in service with Air Zim apparently
