  1. CCA Treated lumber. How safe is it to use for household projects, not anything food related. On another note, where is the best place to buy wood apart from builders, Buco, etc.? I want to build a desk top but don't necessarily want to use pine.
  2. When I ordered they only had the 5pro in stock. I figured I would probably upgrade the extruder and ptfe tube at some point. I only realised later that it has silent stepper drivers so I am quite happy about that. The fans are quite loud so that is going to be my first thing to tackle.
  3. I was a bit sceptical on why I should go for the ender 5 as opposed to the ender 3 if the parts are similar. after my first print I realised why once I saw the movement of the frame and table caused by the stepper motors.
  4. Well, the Dragon has landed. Assembly was super easy. I had some initial trouble with the z height. The leadscrew was updated but not the firmware so my first prints was a mess. I am busy printing some brackets. One to hold your phone and the second to hang my earphones on my desk frame. I designed it in Fusion 360. I have some Autodesk Inventor experience and use Autocad daily so not really a learning curve. I still have some issues to sort out. Bed leveling for one and I still get some stringing. I downloaded Chep's (Youtube) profiles and they seem to be working well as a start.
  5. It's not the best photo but here is an example of how it turned out. The top is from bloekom (I think salinga?) and the rest is treated pine. It came out a bit darker because I added two coats of stain. I also had an issue here a few spots where I mixed saw dust and glue to close a few holes swelled up quite a bit. It could have been the stain or the varnish I only saw it after applying the varnish.
  6. I will try the tea first. I was surprised by the effect the vinegar and steel wool gave me. I tested it at around 2 hours, 8 hours and a day later. 8 hours gave me the best results, at 24 hours it started to look reddish. in the end I went with Nova 18 stain in the Aged Oak colour. Their colour samples in store do not match up at all with the actual staining colour. It only costs around R80 for 500ml so not that expensive. What I like about Nova 18 is that I can stain it and then finish it off with a water based varnish to protect it. I will post a photo later of the completed coffee table.
  7. I've read about the steel wool and vinegar so I have some of that standing in the garage to try out later.
  8. I'm looking to stain pine wood a darker colour. I've built a coffee table and I want to keep the grain pattern of the pine, just darker. I used grip seal but I do not like the results it gave me, you have to apply it extremely evenly and the resulting piece has a shiny finish. With the grip seal any overlapping sections show up in the finished product. What brand or type of stain do you prefer and what is the best method to apply it? Do you prepare the wood in a specific way to accept the stain?
  9. I've read that people also use a scissor-jack to control the height of your router if your router does not have the lug to use a threaded rod.
  10. Looks good! I like the idea of functional prints, even as simple as just the sanding sticks. I decided to try and get my hands on an Ender 5, now everyone is sold out and I'm guessing that once everyone has stock the prices are going to go way up.
  11. Filament Selection, which filament is best to use for things like brackets to hold things like pipes or vacuum hoses in place? It seems like it would be between ABS and PETG?
  12. I mainly want to print functional parts to support my other hobbies. I wanted to go with the Ender 3 for the relatively low price so I did not even consider the Ender 5. The main advantage seems to be additional stability of the frame and the bed that only moves in the z-axis. I will see what I can find after lockdown and take it from there.
  13. Would you also mind sharing typical cost of printing, maintenance etc?
  14. Are you happy with the Ender 3? I am looking at buying one after lockdown. The price for a new stock one seems to be around R4500 would you recon it's the best printer in this price range? Where did you buy your printer?
  15. I have floor to wall steel shelving to store larger items and boxes. I'm specifically looking at a solution to store hand tools in something like a drawer system. The architectural drawers might be an alternative. Those roll away drawers are quite expensive but seem like a worthwhile investment.
  16. I'm subscribed to his channel, pretty cool idea. We are renting so I'm trying to limit holes in the wall.
  17. We recently moved and I want to do something different with tool storage. In the old house I had it up on the wall. I am now considering one of those mechanic tool cabinets on castors. I'm mainly considering this because I have woodworking, bike and other general tools to store. I don't have much space because I'm sharing a single garage with a car. How are your tools stored and what other options would you recommend?

Seeing as most of us are at home we can share our bike rooms or workshops. We moved recently and I am looking for ideas for bike storage and workshop setup/layout.
  19. I am looking for a 27.5+ 3" tyre, my rear tyre is passed repairing but I am planning on upgrading the wheelset in the coming months to a 29" set so don't really want to spend on a new tyre now.
  20. Thanks, my question is what oil I should use. I am not too familiar with wood finishes.
  21. My guess for the purple was also purple heart and the light I thought it was oak. The light wood does not give off the oak smell when planing.
  22. I made this ring box from pieces of wood I received from someone, some spots still need some work and some angles need squaring up. I am curious what type of wood the red and dark wood are? Both are quite hard and dense. My actual question is what should I use to finish it with?
  23. As far as I know the pumped storage scheme is still used to reduce load shedding for COCT. The problem at the moment is that there is not enough excess power during the night to pump the water back up the mountain so there is no generating capacity during the peak hours from the pumped scheme.
  24. I'm looking for a hand saw to cut smaller pieces with. What saw would be worthwhile to get at a reasonable price? I was looking at the ryoba type saws on toolcraft, but most of them are out of stock. I'm building a ring box using hand tools and I need to split the wood for an inlay and to later cut the lid from the base.
  25. 18. Only mint coloured bikes can be sold "as mint condition".
