  1. Lots of the top guys run shorter distances(5k) as cross training. Good running legs seem to help climbing on the bike. The core is also very important, so core work is vital.
  2. What is the cycling etiquette for passing another cyclist? Should the overtaker ackinowledge the overtaken or just keep going? As the overtaken, I would appreciate a little greeting, just so I don't feel too bad about being passed. As the overtaker I love to greet the rider( usually runner or walker actually!) that I am passing, just so they remember how easily I passed them!
  3. Thanks MudDee, its always great to have a response from you...for the mouse I am afraid! I tend to get sore hands after rides, mainly the padded areas below my little finger and wondered if these grips would help.
  4. Hubbers, anyone used these ergo grips that seem to fit the hand better than the thin factory standard? Why do you see all the pro riders still with the thin grips? Is it because of the weight factor or just that they spend less time on the bikes! But if you think about it they may spend an hour less on race day, but they spend 20 hours more during the week, so there must be another reason...
  5. This thread is covering many discussion topics and is clearly very clever by confirming the following: 1-The number of people who like the new Radioshak kit 2-The number of caddies' sisters Tiger has not slept with 3-The number of roadies who greet regularly 4-The number of decent bikes for sale on the Hub that I can afford! 5-The number of pro mtbers winning on 29ers 6-The cost to wear your helmet and avoid further brain damage 7-Not covering the total kg increase over Xmas!!
  6. He looks like he just pushed his finger through the toilet paper!
  7. I agree with the greeters. It is so easy to do. As a MTBer, I was under the impression that when you bought a road bike you attended a special clinic run by an association called "Roadies Forever"which covered topics such as " Your cycling form is more important than being polite"...
  8. Thanks for the feedback, I don't undertsand how your set-up does not change when you are riding a full suspension bike. Surely the pedals are attached to the bottom bracket and the seatpost or frame that is connected to the rear suspension moves...
  9. Holy, what do you mean it became active?
  10. Good day Hubbers, I saw a shockpost being advertised in last months bicycling mag, has anyne tried these and if so how were they? For those who have not seen them, it is a carbon seatpost with a built in shock just below the seat. They retail for around R 1900, so if it does give some respite from the bumps and as the ad says only adds 492g to overall weight, is it worth it instead of full suspension? Is the option not then to buy a really good hardtail and add this baby on to act as a semi full suspension?
  11. I am amazed that during this ranting and raving the costs involved in servicing your bike have not been mentioned much...they are rediculous. That is why so many hubbers service themselves. I cant understand why you can complain about a medical bill from a specialist when you are prepared to pay R500 on a meal out/ R 350 for a bike service/ more for a bike than most people in SA earn in a year/ R4000 for entry into a stage race... Another point forgotten here is that Drs have huge debtors books, as medical aids and patients refuse to pay/delay paying. I heard a Dr being asked for a discount once, by a very wealthy businessman...the Dr agreed to the 50% reduction that was being asked, and offered 50% of his experience and expertise during the operation. The businessman agreed to the original rate! I agree that you need to discuss the fee before your consultation/operation...as you would before you checked your beloved bike into your LBS for a service.
  12. Morning everyone. I ride only MTB, but this query might be for both road and MTB. The scenario is...you approach a climb in your big chain ring and middle on the back chain ring. When your caddence begins to drop due to the incline, is it better to change to the middle chain ring in the front or change through the gears on the back? Which way causes the most wear and tear? I know you should be selecting the gear early and preparing yourself for the climb, but there are many instances where the climb comes out of no where. Any advice?
  13. May she have many happy years watching telly on the couch!
  14. Where is dingdong? He can participate without high-jacking and he is nowhere to be seen...maybe still at school!
  15. Dingdong, this is a fun peaceful place for adults to interact and learn more about the sport they love. Now get off the computer and go to school!
  16. That is awesome! Which is the best XC bike from Morewood...the Zula or Kwela? Ding dong, I am also interested in the turning circle of the 29er, any feedback?
  17. Can someone explain steel versus alu versus carbon...is steel lighter, cheaper stiffer etc. And why are there not more steel bikes around, or are there? Thanks
  18. Ok so its just me...I didnt say I didnt enjoy the show...I love any cycling on the box and agree the programme is awesome. Its just when you have to turn the sound down for the music and up for the commentary so as not to wake the neighbours. By the way I love banging music...just in the car or on my ipod!
  19. Morning, just a quick one before I head to work... I watched the Miway MTB programme last night became really annoyed with the banging music in the background( and foreground) during the show! Is it only me or do the producers think because we ride MTB that we can/should/want to endure this loud mess in between the commentary?
  20. Hey, I see lots of members online...anyone got any input?
  21. Hi all, I have seen some Bianchi MTB's on the Solomon website, they look awesome! What are they like, how do they ride, are they light fast and comfortable?? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
  22. Omri, your length should not influence your bike size...if you think your length may be an issue be wary of white cycling shorts!
  23. Good day all, Is it advisable to wear orthotics in cycling shoes? I wear them all day but for some reason have not put them in my cycling shoes. What is the consensus...
  24. Thanks everyone! Madaboutmerida...agree that would be a great exercise. I also agree that more time on the bike would assist the fitness and allow me to feel better towards the end of a race...but if my training partners are training as much and have the better bikes...I will always be pushed to stay with them!!
  25. These are great fun events! I would get to Giba and run for 45mins then ride for an hour then run for 30mins. Running on the road is very different to trails and Giba will help get you ready. Good luck!
