  1. I had my setup like this for 1 ride... On my rig it made the bike continue in a straight line whilst I was attempting to take a corner. The result was me performing, what could only be described as, an "eject"; me running one way and the bike continuing merrily on it's straight line path.
  2. "Better" might not be the right term here... Chains wear quicker than cassettes. The theory is that by replacing a chain when needed one can prolong drive train life...
  3. JB will have a definite answer, but my guess would be chain wear... A new cassette wants a new chain. A used cassette my "spit" at a new chain for a couple of km's and then settle down as the new chain stretches/settles into the drivetrain. my 2 cents...
  4. Here's some rather interesting info I haven't tried an Aspen on the front, but I do prefer the Monorail in front to the crossmark by a long margin. The crossmark, to me, feel skittish on the front, where the monorail is very predictable. Those C knob really do a good job on dry surfaces. The "skittishness" of the crossmark becomes a plus point at the back though. I quite like to throw the rear around on purpose.
  5. Dis soos kuns...
  6. I saw 2 96 - 1000d's at Grant's cycles on Thursday, just arrived in the store all covered in protective padding. Also saw one at Cyclelab Centurion. Realy pretty bikes. Surprisingly CL Centurion had the better price... by about 2k!
  7. I sent Brandon a mail requesting feedback and he replied about a week later... PM me your email address and I send you the spec-sheet he sent me. I've posted all the pics I have of the 2011 range already.
  8. Dang, that sucks. That's probably my biggest fear; to get knocked over from behind. Just glad you're all good and respect to Mr Freelander for stopping. Hope you get the bike sorted.

+1 Bang for buck you can't go wrong with MagicLight
  10. The 96's geometry is more towards the racing side. So the rider will be "hunched" over a bit more to get him into a more aerodynamic position on the bike. I think that long days in the saddle will most likely take it's toll in the shoulders and maybe lower back. The 120's geometry is weighed more towards trail riding. Rider position on the bike will be more relaxed by having the rider sit slightly more upright, placing less strain on shoulders and back. So in theory the 120 will be a comfier ride... I think... I'm not sure what the new 120 go for, but I've seen the new 96-1000 go for JUST under R20k.
  11. Just remember that the weight of your bike's rim/tube/tire (I don't mention hubs here because their diameter is so small that the type of weight difference one sees here will result in a very small difference in force required to turn a light/heavy hub. IMO differences here are mostly thanks to better bearing systems.) is the place where weight saving will make the biggest difference. Personally I run only liners and only once did a thorn sneak through. I did manage to finish the race before the tire was to flat to ride on... Most of us will notice 100g extra in our wheels. If you guys running double protection don't believe me, test it. Take out your liner and heavy slime tube and go for a quick spin with just a normal tube... You'll see what you're dragging around with you very quickly... Then quickly put back your liners and slime before you puncture your spare tube!
  12. Since the launch was this weekend I suppose I can post these... Spark 50 Spark 40 Spark 35 It's like seeing that girl across the room and you just know
  13. Nice find WW
  14. Brendan from Probike.co.za sent me a pic of a Spark 50. I don't know if we're allowed to post it yet, but I can say the paint job on the 2011 spark 50 looks very similar to a spark (deduct 10 from 50) from 2010...
  15. This sucks. Actually it's an outrage. What can we do to stop this becoming a regular occurrence? Fountains and Groenkloof are where I do the bulk of my training because there are no cars trying to knock you over and it's a access controlled "safe" area. I'm shocked and outraged. This is unacceptable! Entry fees are up too...
  16. Sounds like a "2 ply" debate to me...
  17. I was being a good little hubber on Friday night and serviced my hubs before the Cullinen race on Saturday. In a moment of haste, I didn't square off the rotor's lockring and managed to strip the tread... Lesson learnt: basically same as the age old rule of measure twice, cut once. AND don't do a service the evening before the race because you may find you need a replacement part from an LBS and those tend to be closed after 5pm. So... Does anyone here perhaps have a 32 hole, rear center-lock hub they could donate, sell cheaply or throw at me I did write a post about this in the wanted section, but that didn't get any real circulation...
  18. I have a Shwalbe Albert I slap on the front when things get wet. The knobs are bigger and further apart than the ones on Nevegals. The tyre is okay in the dry as well, but dry conditions will wear the tyre quickly though...
  19. I never got the chance to fall over this weekend... My bike entered an "unridable" state on Friday eve... It all started with 3 new backup tubes all having holes in them and ended with a trashed rear hub and greasy brake pads... Having to do chores around the house on Saturday sucked BIG time.
  20. I've tried a couple and the one I always go back to is Endomondo. But all the free stuff have their plus points and drawbacks. I'd like to find one that shows "total climbing" and that doesn't freeze up randomly. The other one I have on my phone is MapMyTracks...
  21. I think we've established that the Scale 70 will have a RS Tora and the 50 will have a RS Recon. But the off topic comment I'd like to make wrt the XCM is this... I replaced the RS Dart1 on my Giant Thermo with a secondhand Suntour X100 off a Avalanche 1 the other day. So on Monday I went and hit some hills at Groenkloof. I did one "Hill loop" 3 times. The loop has a nice little "have to gun it" ruff-ish up-hill bit (right before you get the long bridge right next to the fence). With the Dart1 I was used to loosing traction in the front because the front would bounce quite a bit. With the X100 however, nothing. I have traction in the front all the way up... First lap I thought I just had a good line, but the improvement became apparent on the 2nd and 3rd lap. I remember thinking "huh? ... ?" The little X100 (apparently it's a re-branded Raidon LO?) has made me gain a LOT of respect for Suntour. Back to the topic though... Does anybody have any info on the 2011 Sparks!?!?
  22. The red and white does look nice... But every time I even look at taking something white to the trails I can hear my government having a hissi... So I've been conditioned not to mix white and MTB-ing... Plus the black and green just looks faster
  23. Donno about the shoe, but I found this tid-bit on bike radar. "Scott team equipment manager Hermann Pacal says it'll almost certainly be a 2012 model year product, and the company may even offer a very limited release as a 2011 bike." here's the link
  24. I dropped mine the day I got it... oops... The drop dislodged the lens. I opened it, refitted the lens to the PC board and wha-la. It works. Don't know if this might be your problem too... Just thought I'd share.
  25. oops, dylsexia getting the better of me again... I mean't Recon Solo Air
