  1. Good Day All I'm looking for some advice. Thinking of selling my lockdown project build but not sure how to value it. Quite a bit of investment went into it, some stuff ordered on Merlin etc. But point was to keep busy and learn bicycle mechanics which was great for the mental health 🙂 Now I'm not cycling due to other things in life having my attention so the bike is not being used unfortunately. Bike is a Trek 7300 fx, (I'd reckon about 2005 frame alloy with chrome steel fork) was scratched up so bad I took it to get powder coated. Size 54 medium Drivetrain: shimano claris R2000 shifters, long cage claris rear derailleur, 11-34 cassette, shimano crankset with 46-34 chainring combo. Brakes: Mini vbrake from TRP (CX9) had to import these to work with claris STI's. Cockpit: Ryder saddle, Satori suspension seatpost, Rapide flared bar. Wheels: shimano hubs laced to WTB Chris Cross I19 tubeless rim brake rims. Currently running some Specialized non tubeless ready 38c tyres but have some tubeless ready continental CX king 700x35 available (posted those in classifieds already) Fun bike to ride, frame got clearance for wider tyres and even those vbrakes have good clearance for wider tyres. I guess nobody can take my word that it's a Trek frame so hence it's a bit difficult to set a value, for all you know it could be a frame from a makro bike. Haha. Won't get the back the bucks invested in it I'm sure of that but trying to see if it would be worth selling or else I'll just keep it. General condition is very good, mostly new components were used. The shimano square taper bottom bracket must be from 2005 but man it still works well. Haha Interested to know your guys thoughts or even offers Thanks 🙂
  2. I need a hardcore hardtail in my life😥 #DreamBuild awesome frame. ... One day is one day. Lol
  3. Lockdown gave me time to learn about bicycle maintenance. Reading online, watching videos on YouTube etc., bought a toolkit and off I went. Built a gravel /cx bike out of a old Trek flat bar 7300 fx hybrid dad bike. Works great, Plenty tyre clearance and who said vbrakes aren't cool? Haha Now completed a second build with a carbon 26" Kuota KUP HT (I thought these guys only made road bikes to be honest) I've learnt that building a bike can work out expensive, but it sure is a lot of fun to have such a project to work on after a long week at work. I find it very relaxing. Like an adult Lego set... Fun task with a beer to keep you company. Haha Frame is actually a bit big for me but whatever. Lol The Build: Kuota KUP HT SR Suntour Raidon Air Remote lockout Mavic crosstrail wheels Drivetrain is mix Masala: Shimano 10 speed 11-42 cassette | Rapide crank 34t Oval | Ltwoo 10 speed shifter | Sram x5 rear derailleur with derailleur extender from rapide. Tektro hydraulic brakes. Bike is running well. Now I must teach myself how to bleed brakes, the rear one is a bit spongy. I suspect I'll always be on the look out for old frames. Haha
  4. I use this one https://www.rookiesports.co.za/product/fluir-elite-1000lm-front-bicycle-light-usb-c-rechargeable/#reviews Don't use it all that much on the bike as I hardly ride when dark, worked great on few times I used it. I actually use this at home on the nights when I have loadshedding. Lol
  5. 2x14 don't mess with Microshift....ahead of the game. Lol
  6. 2020 lock downs made me learn bicycle maintenance... How? Watching YouTube videos.... Bicycle maintenance is not all that difficult... Make a project out of it, bikes are fun to work on... Kids in my complex would see me in the garage building my project bike, before I knew it I was the LBS of my complex for the kids and their rides. Lol
  7. I use a Topeak one. Can't recall which model it is now.but similar price to the Lezyne offerings. Use it on a gravel wheel...35c. Works great, but before had a cheap R50 pump that was so frustrating to use. I learnt with pumps that it's best to not be shy of paying, even if it's rarely used...the day you need it, pumping a flat must not steal ones joy. Haha
  8. For the days when I feel like riding to the local store in normal shoes.... Quick delivery to Takealot pickup point.
  9. Perhaps not a gravel bike... More like a cx bike. Started it's life as a hybrid bike (Trek 7300 fx) whole point of the build for me was to learn bike mechanics... I think I achieved that. Was fun. Just the wheels I got Wayne at Rapide to build for me and then powder coating at summit in midrand. Other than that, YouTube videos taught me what to do. Lol. Trek 7300 fx alloy + standard chrome fork TRP CX9 mini vbrakes Shimano claris groupset 46-34 with 11-34 WTB Rims with Conti race kings cx. Set up tubeless Wrenching time on weekends is now done, time to get out there and ride.
  10. Are any of the routes here doable on my 35c CX rig? ???? Is there any non technical trails.
  11. Items delivered today. Was expecting it tomorrow, but DHL opted to do residential deliveries today due to their high work load... Well that's what the driver told me. I'm just glad to have the goods. My hybrid to cx project can commence... A good first experience in importing goods.
  12. I've placed an order with Merlin yesterday morning at about 10am. Parcel left Manchester yesterday afternoon. Just checked now, it has just left Heathrow about an hour ago for Jhb. So far so good. Hopefully no delays when it lands. First time importing anything.
  13. I managed to find some cheap cantilever brakes for project I'm busy with. (Flat Bar Hybrid to Drop bars for some off road/gravel touring) Had v-brakes on originally, been a struggle to find canti's, but this is why i like supporting small LBS's. They tend to have some of the old technology unlinke the big cycle stores. ???? They nothing fancy like shimano/Avid/Tektro but will do for now. The project can now commence. I managed to also get the front cable stop. I now need a rear stop, similar to this that hangs from the seatpost clamp. Is there a way to make one at home? what solutions exist?
  14. https://www.cashcrusaders.co.za/new-goods/beyer-floor-pump/stockcode8778 I bought this one at Cash Crusaders like 2 years back I think....It works...it puts air in the wheels, what more can I ask for? Road bike, mtb even setup tubeless with some hard fast pumping ???? I think I rather splurge on a good portable pump. It will suck to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, punctured and with a useless pump. Rather be prepared on trail/road, assuming that nobody would be able to help you. Some trails you only see people at the start, after 5kms in you are on your own never to see another rider again & you better be prepared for the worst. At home, If the floor pump fails, you always got your nearest Filling station to take your wheel(s). hehe.
  15. Ended up powder coating the frame. The hybrid to gravel bike project can commence.....
  16. Can you not apply a clear coat to the bare aluminum afterwards to prevent having to continuously clean up fingerprints etc. ?
  17. Hi All Quick question with regards to SRAM TT shifters. Right shifter is 10 speed index and left shifter is friction. With the left shifter, since it is friction, can it be used with any front derailleur and would it be possible to use a 8 speed FD within a 10 speed set up?
  18. Thanks for the input all. I don't mind the extra elbow grease to get the desired finish. I guess its the joints that are annoying me now because it seems impossible to remove the paint in those spots. I used paint remover as much as I can and done some sanding. So quite literally its at all the joints where there is paint.
  19. Hi. where did you get this done? any contacts?
  20. Good Morning Folks I trust that you are all well. Looking for some advice on removing paint from an alloy frame. I've removed like over 90% of it. I'm at the point where I'm not getting any joy at removing the paint at all the weld joints. What's the best way to remove the paint in these tight spots? Does it need to be stripped of ALL paint? I'm considering anodizing the frame. Not sure where yet. Thanks!
  21. Easier to buy new components and claim you had it lying around than buying a new shiny bike. Even though the groupset alone was more than 15k. lol
  22. As a colored man this makes me happy. Growing up i was told cycling is a white persons sport / recreational activity....just stuck to playing football. ????This exposure to the sport is needed. Amongst those boys could be a World Cup winner. I believed a lie...the lie must not be passed down from generation to generation. Awesome clip! Maybe one day my son can buy his own 50k bike without getting negative frowns from the family...."50k for a bicycle, are you mad?!" ????????
  23. Parts for my hybrid bike conversion. Planning to go the drop bar route and create a gravel/touring rig. Finally found suitable levers for the long pull v-brakes....Just to find the bar end shifters. Looks like CRC will be the only way. Also a casual browse through Cash Converters and found a new 8 speed chain for R99 bucks. Weird item to find in Cash Converters. ????
  24. Some DIY repairs. The blue handle threaded rod stripped so was unable to clamp the frame. Builders Warehouse fix. 60 bucks for a meter of rod and some nuts & wing nuts, along with washers got it working again. Even got spare cuts of rod cause had to buy a meter of rod. I'm sure the OEM would have charged an arm and leg for a new clamp. ???? ParkTool stand will come one day when I'm big, for now this will do. ????
  25. I used to have the 1x10 setup. Shifted well. It just worked. I would buy the components for a budget build. Gave no issues.
