  1. Couple of days ago discover that my carbon Titan frame has a massive crack behind the BB. Hopefully I can get a replacement frame soon. Pioneer Trek around the corner and I need replacement soon.
  2. http://www.spadout.com/a/q-factor-the-space-between-our-feet/ ‘Q’ and Performance Beyond the implications to the human body, q-factor can affect the power, efficiency and bike handling of any cyclist. First, a rider generates power through a combination of cadence (crank revolutions per minute) and gearing. Power output has the highest potential when our hips, knees and ankles are aligned. Alternatively, power decreases when the q-factor is too narrow or too wide. Next, the best example of q-factor effecting cycling efficiency is when riding ‘en danceuse’ (standing on the pedals). A wide q-factor requires more energy to pump the handlebars back and forth. Most cyclists fare better when they can dance up an alpine pass rather than muscle their way through. Finally, bike handling is a serious consideration in terms of q-factor. Pedal to ground clearance while cornering is decreased with higher q-factors. The last thing any cyclist wants is to make contact with the ground with anything other than their tires.
  3. Probably not but I would like a more comfortable pedal stroke. Also when moving from road to MTB it feels super strange and I much prefer the feel on the road bike with my feet closer together. When I'm comfortable I can go faster for longer I hope :-)
  4. Smaller Q-Factor and can get my feet closer together.
  5. Also looks like he dropped the travel on the fork from 100 mm to 80 mm. I did the same to get the front end of my bike lower.
  6. That looks like Johan Kruger on the podium in 3rd place
  7. The effect of Q Factor on gross mechanical efficiency and muscular activation in cycling. Disley BX, Li FX. Source School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK. Abstract Unexplored in scientific literature, Q Factor describes the horizontal width between bicycle pedals and determines where the foot is laterally positioned throughout the pedal stroke. The aim of the study was to determine whether changing Q Factor has a beneficial effect upon cycling efficiency and muscular activation. A total of 24 trained cyclists (11 men, 13 women; VO(2max) 57.5 ml·kg/min ± 6.1) pedaled at 60% of peak power output for 5 min at 90 rpm using Q Factors of 90, 120, 150, and 180 mm. Power output and gas were collected and muscular activity of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM), tibialis anterior (TA), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) measured using surface electromyography. There was a significant increase (P < 0.006) in gross mechanical efficiency (GME) for 90 and 120 mm (both 19.38%) compared with 150 and 180 mm (19.09% and 19.05%), representing an increase in external mechanical work performed of approximately 4-5 W (1.5-2.0%) at submaximal power outputs. There was no significant difference in the level of activity or timing of activation of the GM, TA, VM, and VL between Q Factors. Other muscles used in cycling, and possibly an improved application of force during the pedal stroke may play a role in the observed increase in GME with narrower Q Factors. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.
  8. Yes that is correct and 11T - 42T would be great or anything bigger than the current 36T will help.
  9. It would be nice if we can get bigger 10 speed cassettes (10T - 42T) so that we can run 1x10. Currently standard 10 speed cassettes only go up till 36T.
  10. Don't do ANY training if you want to stand any chance of making it to the race..... @jfriel 19h. Being 100% healthy is more important than being 100% fit.
  11. Rule #5

  13. please don't tell me its already over...... 1: What is the primary business focus of Bridge? To provide unsecured small and short-term loans to the mass retail market. 2: What edition of the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek will be held in October 2013? The fifth edition.
  14. I'm still hoping to win that free entry
  15. I have a PowerTap which I mainly use for Indoor Training and a PowerCal for MTB, My take on it is that it is difficult to perform structured workouts off-road because on the trail, your effort is more dictated by the terrain. A road PM was a cheaper option and hence I decided to go that route. I however also decided to buy a PowerCal to use when Mountain biking. It was freaky when I checked my PowerCal values and it closely matched my actual values. PowerCal Avg wattage and Normalized power values look pretty much the same as the values I get with my PT. My take on this is that for interval sessions nothing beats a proper power meter. PowerCal is good for post ride analysis and tracking your training stress scores. At times my PowerCal have given me some skewed readings but that was because of HR spikes for whatever reasons. But then the other day another spanner was thrown in the works. I realized a significant difference between my power values outdoors compared to indoors (using the same PowerTap wheel and not my PowerCal strap). I calculated a 15% difference in values and luckily for me my outdoor values is 15% higher J My PowerCal values more closely match my indoor PowerTap values. I’m not sure what to make of that. I use my indoor values for training purposes because that is where I do my intervals. If I had to use my outdoor numbers then I would not be here today to type this message. I have since discover the reason for the difference in numbers (outdoor vs indoors) but that is another topic on its own. In summary I think PowerCal is an excellent tool to get you introduced into the world of training with power. If you are serious about your training then you should not measure your training based on miles or hours ridden. You should measure the quality of your training and the amount of stress that you apply. That is where the PowerCal can be a very useful tool.
  16. +1 and we need to get this onto the homepage
  17. How about Lights by Linea + CWC MTB XC Series at Slammer + Contermans + Bottelary MTB + Jonkers Hoek + ......
  18. Jip most helmets comes with crash replacement policy and I ones had 2 replacements in 1 month.
  19. Any idea where I can find the full results?
  20. Never ever sell any bikes, just add more. You also need a track bike and a single speed MTB as well and then a tandem... n+1 indeed!!!
  21. Anybody know where I can buy a Niner BioCentric BB http://www.ninerbikes.com/biocentric
  22. I hear what you are saying but in my opinion it is expensive for what it is. Value for money. And I also bought the alloy lens ring for peace of mind. So if any of my brackets (including GoPro brackets) then at least I won't loose my camera.
  23. I ended up buying loads of items for R487......
