  1. That yellow-looking shirt that was so proudly announced yesterday is not my choice of colour either, but no reason to go overboard! Just kidding - hope it's not injury or something serious.
  2. On the roundabout, it's easier for you (and me, who has an even greater "problem" than 186...) to reach the 70 or 80% thresholds, which are calculated on the same base... Just saying.
  3. Last couple of the school sports weekends - so shot out quickly before spending the day cheering and shooting some pics. Was hoping for a quick ride the afternoon, but was so darned tired from walking around that I got home at about 2 and just sat... At least a longer run in the mountain on Sunday. And now for interschools week... so pretty much same story this coming weekend. Except that the sport is starting on Friday already! For you established multisport peeps... how long is the swim on a 70.3? No, I swim (well, I defined this discipline!) versuipslag, but it's something I am starting to get an itch about.
  4. The only reason I am glad they've moved African-X this (next) year to Boschendal is it gave me a foot in the door ito negotiations, since I can then do the sleep at home option... Still finalising partner, though!
  5. Fortunately I haven't read it... More serious - I totally agree. I have a friend I have to keep preaching to about just taking a break for a couple of days... hardly ever listens but seems to have sunk in a bit now. If anything I'm overly conservative on that front. Biggest problem is - there's always that next race to prep for. Jeez man, pick your battles - is a PB or a medal really that crucial? Very fortunate in the fact that my wife asks "Did you enjoy it?" and does not give a hoot about times. As long as I'm back in one piece and (as bonus) enjoyed it, she's happy.
  6. So I can report back: I rode a bike... and I liked it! Broke nothing - and that includes any speed records! But my enjoyment of the ride is most likely upped by the fact that I stuck to my "no racing" strategy. Nevertheless rode reasonably hard initially. Then caught up with a trail running friend and we rode together from there, lekker relaxed vibe - except for open road climbs, there she wanted to claw back what she lacked in tech abilities. Fun day out. I might ride a bike again. My butt did not like it. Legs was more than fine!
  7. Okay, swallow your coffee before reading this... I will not be held liable for any fluid-induced screen damage. I am going to do my first MTB race (I'll ride it more than race, anyways!) tomorrow... in almost 2 years. It is longer than my last 2 month's riding combined. My last year's riding hardly ever included anything technical. And in rehab for a tear in shoulder with a trail run next week and Cape Town marathon in... 6 weeks? What could possibly go wrong?! Not to worry, taking it easy, enjoying the ride and anywhere I have doubt, I will "practice some trail running". Actually now that I've been talked into it, I am quite looking forward to it, esp with no pressure. Oh, haha, even the organisers had a skrik when they saw my entry - I got two emails. First they seeded me in A batch... then they must've realised this idiot hasn't touched his MTB in years, so they promptly resseded me to C (the last batch). It's gonna be a jol!
  8. Sorry, that was in response to the sport paragraph. So ja, just for sport. Not all that bothered to be on the latest of the latest ito series or movies, so NF will do.
  9. I am looking at a legit pay-stream - but which options are available? Looked at Sky but could only find them installing their own dstv setup. But did not search all that hard, I presume...
  10. Barry - same here for me. I have a set of the original Sense Pro with over 700 k's on it looking like it has the same amount left in them - they are as good as new. (Except for not being washed...) Some wear and tear but nothing show-stopping. A buddy of mine worn part of both his frontfoot through within 650k's. I think it was you that asked about the Mazamas as well. (And as previously stated, the colour for the femaile version of the shoe is much nicer!) They run all their runs with us, gravel road, rocks, you name it. This same guy that killed his Sense Pro's ran Otter in them last year, another in our regular group ran Whale of Trail (talk about variety of conditions) with her Mazamas last weekend. No issues. Think they're much lighter than Cascadia, but since you fitted both, you can comment... Andrew... the Speedcross is not something we should even be selling in SA (my opinion!) The tread is made for genuine wet conditions, I killed the tread on mine running normal trails. It is a very hot shoe - plus it is very narrow around the toes. Zero protection under the forefoot, which is to be expected if you run minimal, not with that kind of drop. It may be a good shoe for you, but it really did not work for me - and like I said, most of SA conditions don't match what it was designed for. (That said, this is for the 3 - I do not know what they've changed for the 4...)
  11. ...which would hopefully lead to strengthening the correct muscles so that you don't need anything other than neutral shoes.
  12. Ja but still, that gave you 3 months to enter! And they gave numerous notifications on multiple platforms that entries are getting low. And amazing how many people started whining that they actually wanted to enter but now it's sold out - the day after it was sold out. Sorry, that just grinds me. For crying out loud, you know you want to run. Enter. Why do you want to wait for Feb to enter? You had 3 months. And warnings. Now you moan? (You is not "you", Jackes!)
  13. Mudsimus, then my buddy just had a bad pair, I presume. (Though I've heard other people complaining about this as well.) Both his shoes tore at the "fold" on the upper within a couple of runs of each other. Cobus, with your (and others') comments regarding Inov-8, I am quite curious and have in past considered looking at them. (And my Altras are not going to last another 100 years.) For starters - what are the differences between their naming convention and numbers? Rocklite vs Trail Talon - is the Rocklite for more rocky terrain and as such heavier/more protective/more treaded? And then within each range, what does the numbers mean?
  14. What's the drop on the shoes you usually run in? Because if you're not used to low-drop (6mm or lower) shoes, most of my advice will be relatively worthless... or you must convert to these shoes with caution. Firstly - if dirt road running is what you're most likely going to be doing, why not stick with the road shoes? Or get some road shoes with a bit more tread than some of the completely flat-soled ones. If not, why not try some of Salomon cross-over range, which is suited to both. (And I also think they have a higher drop, if you're more accustomed to that.) I also run in Salomon Sense Pro's (the original version), which has very little tread - 6mm drop. Sense Pro's 2's uppers are really dodgy, so stay away from them - and they have a much more blocked tread. But fully agree on the stance that the more racy shoes do not last. My Sense Pro (not my go-to shoe of late) has I think more than 700k's (of trail running!) behind them and still looks good. Friend of mine "works" his front foot a lot and he bald-patched his front foot area in about 650. Both of our uppers are fine. He then bought the 2's and got uppers torn after 200. Then went to Brooks Mazama, which is a very very similar shoe to the Sense Pro (original) and still using it. So that may be something to consider as well. (I know some guys that swear by Brooks Cascadia as well, but heard they are pretty narrow.) The Mazama comes in a pretty shocking yellow. And ironically two ladies also run in them in my regular group. Their shocking red-pink option is (to me at least!) much better looking than the yellow... but that's just looks. The old Mantra's are pretty darn close to road shoes as well, but you don't get them any more. I's personally have loved a pair of those. I run a lot in Altra Superior 2's, but they do not like hardpack. Mine is wearing down on the knobs rather rapidly. But look at Altra if you want the widest shoes available - maybe another model/or road shoe. Super super comfy - somebody recently called them "the crocs of running!" (I also train in their Instinct road shoe). Zero drop on Altra's, so beware of this! My preferred shoe - I love them! - is Saucony Peregrines. 4mm drop, wicked grip (which you won't need and my feet just love them - well, for that matter between Altra and Saucony, my feet seem to be very happy. I use the old 5's obtained in yellow ticket sale, think they're up to model 7 now, so not sure what the changes are that was made. NB also make some awesome trail shoes, some also with relatively smoother tread. And their toe boxes are usually also nice and wide. Think they have a Leadville trail shoe that had less tread on it than the road shoes I used back then from them, but I presume with more protection. And still, I have not had experience in the Inov-8's, but have not heard anything bad from them. May think of more stuff as the day goes on and/or other comments come in.
  15. Barry, what made you decide on that specific shoe (the Inov-8 TT250) with so many options available? Just curious. Have not heard anything bad of Inov-8, but no personal experience.
  16. Oh goodness, just realised that CTM is only 8 weeks away... But feeling happy that I am over the illness. Slowly picking up the k's again and should be good for a lekker ramp-up towards then. Hopefully adding some more structure to the training in this period. Ja well, the hopefully was put in there intentionally!
  17. Haley, to add to what the muddy one said, I got the 12l instead of the 5 purely because of some compulsory equipment in certain races. Just to be safe... Even that does not feel bulky. It is snug, clings like nothing, no bounce, it's just... there. I am not a woman, but I took the S-M as a gauge of my size (or lack thereof!) and run with it empty most times for those "inbetween" runs, where you don't need to lug around 2l bladder of water. Absolutely no issues running it empty. I have several female friends running with these vests and all love it. Note that the vest does not come with a bladder, for those expecting a bladder. But apparently any bladder will work should you require more than two flasks.
  18. I have the Ultra 4... recently got myself the Salomon 12l vest. Not even comparable ito comfort. At the time I bought, the Ultra4 was a lot cheaper, than a) currently and b) the Salomon options. Therefore a very valid buy to get my foot in the door. From the Ultra 10 price point there's not that big a jump to the Salomon. Just saying... Oh, and I don't know which phone you have. But it needs to be tiny to go into that phone pouch. Mine fell out numerous times - simply because I tend to snap everything I run past and do not want to put the phone in the rear pockets.
  19. Had fun on the trails. We have a local series called Run the Vines, which is great in bringing trail running to people. Not overly technical and mostly rather flat vineyard runs. Fortunately they have now also started with a slightly longer option of 17k's, so ran that at Ridgeback wines on Saturday. Used to have just 5 and 10k options. Still felt a bit under the influence of the antibiotics, but since I drank my (hopefully!) last one on Friday, that was to be expected! Really flat towards the end, but happy with the outing. What was awesome to see, was the people towards the back-end of the race plugging away at it and finishing. With smiles that said they'll be back next time!
  20. Another problem with barometric: weather changes. I've been on top of a mountain when weather came in, having left in sunny but crisp morning and been told that I was riding at -300 elevation!
  21. Haha, so we were chatting about Argus this morning... and I went to check the dates. Argus won't be a priority for me with only two weekends between that and Oceans in 2018! Will likely just cruise it for fun. (On a cycling forum, this comment may get me a warning point!)
  22. Hayley, if in doubt, go for the roomy fit. King of roomy fit is Altra - they just fit like a pair of slippers! (But they also have a zero drop, so if you're used to traditional shoes, beware!) Like Scott mentioned, NB has very nice fit as well, except I'm not fond of their "loose heel" feel they have of late. That said, I also have a pair of FF Zante's (thanks yellow ticket sale!) and got used to it quickly once running in them. Though those are quite narrow by NB standards. But somehow my current go-to shoe brand is Saucony, they just work for me at the moment. Wide enough, low enough drop, not too soft... but that may not be what you require. As for sizing - I tend to go for about a thumb between my big toe and my shoe end. Most often that ends up with my big toe being just behind that hard bit on the front of the shoes, which can also cause irritation. But again, give your foot space to splay out. This may be my trail running notions that clings to that notion, but I can't run in too narrow a shoe.
  23. Never ever look at the price of some trail runs. Crazy... and there you're more often than not self-sustained. Agreed, the logistics for should tropical fruit and fan collide is more complex, but still...
  24. Went into the mountain, had a slip and had to hobble home with what at the time was a very sore calve. Feels better today. At least got to take some pics - and was outside. To rest the calve I got onto the MTB on Sunday. Nearly had to google how the thing works... but downhills are so much more fun on a bike than running!
  25. 8 parkruns. and two extra kays to build up a thirst for the beer.
