  1. Join up, Candz. I am in no way intending to run Comrades, but am part of the tread and Strava group. Lots of tips from these wise peeps with all this experience between them.
  2. Mine is easy - just my initials...
  3. With my running mileage literally being higher than my cycling mileage, I'm obviously quite keen to try this one out. And if it does happen that I miss a week or two's target, it's not as if it's something I would not have bought otherwise...
  4. Agree with shaper. Plus by now I know what shoes I wear, so no assistance require other than "Do you have this in my number?" Other than that - I love SWH for yellow ticket sales. Uninterrupted shopping!
  5. Take it easy Ferret! Heal up well. Good to hear you're back in training, though!
  6. First one for the year done! Man, Bay to Bay is such a great run when it's not howling like last year. Ran into a buddy and cruised together for most of the while. Got separated somehow just before hitting Suikerbossie on the return. But still, it was good fun and enjoyed the run and views thoroughly. Lots of work left, but slowly getting into the mood for Oceans.
  7. Good luck, Stretch! Patience... you're approaching it the right way! I have a funny where it seems I've bought a pair of shoes that kills my front/forefoot. I simply cannot do anything longer than 10 k's in them without suffering, so they're only going to be used for those short "mileage eating on shoes" midweek runs. Never had that before. Amazing how different a shoe feels walking and even jogging around - and then even after 13 k's your feet are sending all kinds of hate mail to your brain. Have since read a review (d'oh) where a guy says exactly this - he hates these shoes, his mate absolutely LOVES it... but he is a more forefoot runner and his mate strikes heel. Seems they were designed with the principle of heel striking. Live and learn, they say...
  8. I have found that the gap from 10 upwards is not as big. Once you can run 10, you're waxed. 5k being first big obstacle, then 10. After that, just add gradually. Good luck with the training and race! Keep us updated. And ask questions - a lot of knowledge between these guys. Present company excluded, I'm a running newbie!
  9. 220-age is BS - plenty of references to that. Test your heart-rate - it is unique. Rookie - welcome to the world of trail running... it's a bug that bites!
  10. Friend of mine ran with an A3 Run until recently - loved his. Went the same route and got the Peak on discount, instead of the Spartan. If you're keen on the latest, then you will always have a problem. My big thing was battery life. And apparently the Spartan firmware is still so buggy that they are PO'ing people at a rapid rate of knots. Pretty sure it will be sorted soon, though. But for what you need - you're not going to beat that price on that A3 Run! And the hardware is really very good - or seems that way to me, at least. GPS acquisition is constantly faster than anything else I've had. Peak just received a very nice FW upgrade recently which added some nice stuff, some of which I'm only realising at this stage. So it's not as if development on the older models have seized. Must admit, switch to Suunto was a bit weird - a lot of things have to be done via the App or website. (You simply can't do it on the watch itself - weird...) And they do have a lot of extra stats over what my previous forerunner had. Also the interface (both web and app) is not quite as nice as Garmin. But that is constantly being developed - on both Garmin and Suunto side.

    Some topical fun...
  12. Saucony Kinvara...? I am just waiting for the 8's to come out (runour has it early next year) to try and get some 7's on sale. Not all Altras are those HOKA type clown shoes. The Instinct has 24mm stack, 1mm higher than Kinvara heel - but obviously 5 higher than toe. The One is a bit lower - one or 2 mm. I insidently tried on a One yesterday, but the band over the toes kept pressing against my big toes - what a weird design! And then an Instinct... and got the that... "Another pair?!" look when I got home. Not planning on doing major distance in them, but will see how it goes. Suspecting this may end up replacing some other shoes and the Kinvara route above will leave me with them, Instinct and then the Triumph for long hauls. Also suspect if I get settled, I'll think about something lower drop for long hauls after the Triumphs have expired - which is still a looong way off. Have though of the Innov-8, but not even fitted them once. Don't understand their numbering, naming and arrow standards to start off with...
  13. Because Altra is zero drop, most stores don't keep it. I know of two in the entire Cape suburbs and Winelands area. Most people prefer the more traditional 10-12mm drop. Will see if I still like my Peregrines after UTCT!

Wow... just saw but obviously I was last to know! Talk about a moment... Interesting option from Nico. He did what he had to do to win the DC. Very few people have had that honor of late. And now, ironically, two retires this season. Maybe he could have gone on to defend, maybe another team will completely dominate next year - who knows?! In all likelihood it could not have been much better next year. He accomplished his dream, quitting while you're ahead is not the worst option.
  15. Oh I'm gonna get sooo klapped for this! Altra (and no, I have no ties!) does have a stability line. There, I said it. Wide and comfy is what they're built around. BUT... the zero drop is not everybody's (in fact, very few people's) cup of tea. And I can imagine that it would be worse on road than trail. I do find my Saucony's to also have a much wider toe box than most - and I have Peregrine (trail) as well as the Triumph ISO2 and Kinvara5 for road. All of them feels good. Also maybe try New Balance - I am pretty sure they have stability line as well and I know they're known to be wide. When I started off I used their 1080's and it was a super shoe - just did not last as long as I hoped.
  16. Running the 2's at this stage for my long haul runs... Would like to hear feedback. Initial reviews are... wait, tell me what YOU experience! BTW, how does one know when shoes are kaput? My Kinvara 5's are starting to gove me doubts. May still have some left in them, but no long runs and not too many left - I think. Sadly. Or am I just looking for an excuse to get those Altras I've been wondering about... (Talk about 180 degrees off the Nimbus path!) Agree with Stretch on Brooks. Quite narrow and my second from outside toe went black on every long run with them. In the end used it for my first marathon and after that purely short morning miles. Oh, I also did not like the heel moving around as much - may have just been my perception. (That was on the Ghost 7) That caused me to strike differently and all hell broke loose with my calves. The mentioned Kinvaras changed the world for me...

So... I ended up watching the last race. Backing your team-mate into the bunch, hoping that somebody will take him off is seen as fair play nowadays? I was actually sitting there hoping it would backfire so badly and Vettel pass them both!
  18. Agreed - and even on the places where you can ride - you see more! As you can see from my feed, I am a happy snapper! (And often that's not half of what I take!) Another topic: Lexx, also remember it's (still) that time of year... not sure how bad it is up there, but (the struggle) hay fever is very real! I for one struggle with "allergy sinus" like you won't believe. I found that if I prepare for that in those seasons (March-April is another...) all is well - or at least manageable. It may not be immune system related! Just my 2c...
  19. My schedule simply don't allow for that. But I don't want it differently - unless I can do the same work from home, even if only some days of the week, which will save me 2 hours or so of sitting on the road every day. But hey, at least it's a beaut of a road in the Winelands...
  20. No idea what you're talking about... I ran 1000k's more than I rode this entire year! That includes the beginning of the year, when I still actually rode. And actually took the MTB for a spin the last 3 weekends, just to save the legs a bit with some cross-training.
  21. Haaahaha, almost my story on Argus this year. My rear brake locked completely at a crash - the ine Shunter got hurt in. Did not realise it since it was uphill just after that and... simply couldn't climb! Found the issue when I stopped in Houtbaai and saw my rear wheel dragging! But it was so tight I could not loosen it, went halfway up Suikerbossie to the mechanic stand I hoped was still there - and even that guy struggled to loosen it. Rest of Suikerbossie was a breeeeze! But gatvol by then and just had a jol on the way down, staying well wide of kamikazes down 12 Apostles and the run-in...

Haha, sounds like late 70's early 80's in F1! Aaah, those were the days... (Yes-yes, I know those worked way differently and no internal wings...)
  23. Jackes, why do you even worry about a dreadmill in winter...? Don't you Bloem peeps just put on two pairs of shorts for the cold?!
  24. Loved those Injini socks, but they lasted only 3 runs before big toe had a hole in it. Do suspect that the mud on Bastille Run played a significant role, so may try them again.
  25. All I can say is a friend of mine runs with two pairs of socks, thin one under, thicker one over for blister prevention - and it works for him. I fortunately usually only tend to get blisters with reason - long rainy runs, sand/mud, etc.
