  1. Second one for me. Will likely be running with a buddy, but will see how that pans out. Actually quite easy about goals, but after last year, main aim still is running comfortably and enjoying the day. If I sneak in close to 5:30 I'll be ecstatic, but realistically 4:45 about. Weather will play it's part but thusfar it looks like it'll be a good day out.
  2. The correct scientific answer is: it depends. There is no golden ration. Trail runs vary to each other. I have one start to a run where it takes me approx 45 min to cover the first 3 k's from my house, but gain about 600m in elevation if I must guess. Then there's runs where you can just klap singletrack and it flat and fast. Something to remember is it's a bit more alternate movements, not just one foot in front of the other, for some runs and your stability is therefore important. Make sure your joints can handle the sideways and rotational impact by building up gradually. If you run gravel roads, not an issue obviously! But unless you run flat routes, be prepared to give those calves a good workout - together with the rest of the climbing muscles. Give it a go! Take snacks along and rest along the way. You'll find the time ticks away much faster in nature than in the concrete jungle! Have fun!
  3. Hacc, that sounds like you had a good learning experience! Well done, those are always worth pushing through. Glad you got that out of the way, nausea incl, and will now be ready for the fun run in the cape! And special kudo's for helping a struggling fellow runner!
  4. Speedy recovery Mudsimus! Agree with the rest - do some cross training and bank on your base. It won't disappear overnight. And maybe go into the it with Andrew's strategy?! That is if and only if healed. No use buggering up the entire rest of the year potentially for one run. I know it's a special one for those doing it, but still. Longterm is much more important.
  5. Going for my second Oceans. But still absolutely no inclination for Comrades. Friend of me told me just after Argus that she's got a Comrades entry I can get - did not even answer her! Took my road bike out of spiders' hands, left them homeless... (I'm such a horrible person!) for the CT duathlon a couple of weeks ago and again Sunday.
  6. Oh, on a seperate note. I skipped my run this morning. I'll skip my planned return to swimming this evening. Some weird sinus and a fiery throat since yesterday. At least now and now in a couple of weeks' time!
  7. I did my first Oceans Ultra last year. I was preached not to go hard. Those first 30k's can be done fast, but it will bite you. I listened. And... I guess it also depends on your aims. I just wanted to finish and enjoy it. So I cruised and chatted till Chappies, had legs for Chappies, took it easy down, cruised through Houtbaai, took Constantia Nek as it came, running where I could. And still those last couple of k's started getting the weirdest cramps at the sides of my ankles - but I suspect this was due to the cambered section after the Nek. Take it easy and enjoy it. There'll never be another first!
  8. Carpet, enjoy - it is a great experience! Know it's going to hurt a bit for the last 7 or so. Don't go out hard and enjoy the vibe rather than worrying about results. The only result that counts is crossing the finish line. Agree with Hacc - run from water table to water table. At the next table you are (roughly) 3k's further. And work it into even greater chunks by thinking you'll drink your first bit of gel at table x, then then next at table y... or drink water until table x and then a coke/powerade/whatever is available.
  9. Down here in Slaapstad we have the Tygerberg 30... which I'll be doing since something is clashing with the Argus MTB I would have been doing. Might be for the better, since it'll be my longest run of the year and my first (only?) race in 2018 before Oceans.
  10. Ja, that's what I thought too... "Just to stay fit during winter for W2W." Just a quick jog around the block in the evenings, since it's taking up less time and safer than riding in the dark... At least I did ride my bike a bit towards the end of last year again! And this year starting swimming to expand the horizons a bit more.
  11. Ferret...?! Weren't you man-down with a broken body just the other day after an run-in with an auto whilst on your bike?! How the heck did you pull this out? Or am I confusing you with somebody else?
  12. You may have received it... but it's the weirdest thing. I got a "higher points already awarded" - so just go check. But ja, the weird thing is I got my 300 from HR. But a 10k run (race) is 600 on it's own. A <50k road bike race as well as a 5 k run race are both 300 each. So we did all three - yet somehow they decided 300 is more... whilst even just the first leg of the run is (well, should be) more. Not all that fussed, because I'll max out the fitness points very quickly anyway. Just absolutely mind-blowing logic. So go have a quick look on that date's point. Your's may have been "awarded" but to the same effect as mine.

At least he's able to ride the wheels off the car now... (Sorry, that's a Friday afternoon effort!)
  14. Happy belated birthday Hacc, hope you had a great day and an awesome run! Sub-3 marathon - awesome Edgar! How did your first one go, Candz? That first marathon is always special!
  15. I was entered - first try at tri - but buggered up my shoulder royally and still may not swim. My daughter had a ball at the kids event on Friday though! Hopefully it tickled her interest.
  16. Carpet, I run mostly in Saucony - so here's my (somewhat biased) take. Stick to it! Now... "it" being Saucony. Also started off with Kinvara. Salesman was shocked to hear that I got as much as I got out of them, which was just more than you have - think it was about 750-800. His word were to expect 400-450 from Kinvaras. What I did was to go for the Freedom ISO, which is an awesome shoe for me. And yes, you'll have to pay in on Shoe Booster with the crazy shoe prices nowadays (unless they upped the refund?) but suspect Kinvara would be pretty much the same. On the 8mm drop story - that is the max I'd say you should go for, being used to 4mm. Also have the Triumph ISO, which I got before going lower drop. And they now feel soooo big and wieldy. I just wear them for the odd training run and then 30k plus. The Freedom is supposed to be good for that as well, I have not tried it, but might after Oceans. My other shoes are Altra - but not available at SWH. And only other brand I do occasionally try is NB. I do not like the feeling of their heel of late. But even with that, I've got a set of FF Zante that I really like. And on trail the same - Peregrine (I may look at the 8,still on 5 ) with shoe booster and Altra Superior 2. Their only disappointing thing aspect is the wear on the nobblies - the Altra, that is. The Peregrine's just... awesome!

The more cars launch the more depressed I get. Sorry, but... except for some very small things you can hardly tell any difference between these cars launched thusfar. If they were clean carbon most of us won't recognise a specific car.
  18. Indeed, that's exactly how I got to this mess of missing my XTerra on Sunday. Not resting my one shoulder, "needing to" get my swim up to speed... the rest of the story is history. CBlake, agree! I had one dam swim. Spent most of that on my back, staring at the treetops and trying to calm down. Just that idea of running out of steam and there's nowhere to stand to rest freaked me out completely! Interestingly though, I went much further before getting the tired feeling than I do in the pool - it must still be the mental "end of a length/lap" break I still give in to. Will get there. For now, rest the shoulder and do some running and little riding over the weekend maybe.
  19. Thanks guys. Will get back and swim and leave the other stuff for when I'm being told to use them! Just to clarify - my shoulder injury started with a fall on the trails which I never rested properly and now came back to haunt me...
  20. And to add to that... don't walk 10 abreast! That was my biggest gripe with the entire event. The bits I could/did run up there, I spend more time zig-zagging between people that I lost a bit of my sense of humor. Some walk left, some right, some groups fill up the entire road.
  21. When you guys started off swimming - any particular swimming aids to take note of and seriously consider obtaining? VA has boards and buoys, was wondering about fins and paddles? Or just get in the water and swim. Once my shoulder is sorted.
  22. Scuzzy, you should not worry about Oceans. Well, let's reverse that - if you worry, I'm in deep trouble! A friend of mine moaned about Peninsula time last night and my response was that the fact that he just ran a marathon, somewhat slower than hoped. On the same morning as I did my longest run of the year so far, which was 25k's. And I was chuffed to bits with it... Prior to this pretty much rehab and started to build up from interlinked foot/calf issue. Don't worry and don't go bonkers on mileage now and injure yourself. Recover well from Peninsula and then start doing what you've been doing.
  23. If he goes a min/k faster his runs will be auto flagged as rides by Strava!
