  1. Thank you Morewoodmad - always wondered about that one, following exactly the same reasoning. But unsure whether I was correct or stupid, being new to the mtb scene. Me being lesser skilled (or bawlled ) esp on descends don't now want to go and get off the track completely. I try to stay out the way and to one side, but still on the track.
  2. As predicted, I did it last night. No queue, quick-quick... and then they had to go and get some timeout on my payment... which my bank did not know about! So I've paid, but I haven't entered. So now it's me and the cycletour offices to sort that mess out. Email already sent, but expect them to have some more emails to deal with today. That after this year's debacle makes me think I should go ride something else that weekend! To top it off, this morning I was taking out what I thought was a white t-shirt... and it turned out to be my Tour of Storms t-shirt. All kinds of omens.
  3. Point(s) taken - but I'm with dracs on this. Will not find me sitting in the study at 12 tomorrow, card in hand. Whenever I'm at the computer over the weekend, I'll do it, but jeez, it's not as if 30 000 will have entered by Monday morning.
  4. Ironically, it's on the (more expensive) Craft one. My Cape Storm light jacket is years old, but the engagement of the zip still 100% - due to it being metal parts.
  5. Also have a Craft one - works great in heavier rain and you know it's not going to be removed. For those "maybe it will drizzle a bit" the CapeStorm "apple jacket" works a treat. Only problem is the flippen useless plastic zip - 2nd ride and the bottom thingy already started breaking.
  6. Haha, Ratty, now I've heard everything! Talk about hlaf full vs half-empty...
  7. Just check 2003's 2-4... Aaag stuffit, check further! LA, Ulla, Vino, Tyler Hamilton, Zubeldia, Iban Mayo, Basso, Moreaux... I think (dicey process to begin with, so correct me if I'm wrong) the only one not having been banned of the lot is Zubeldia? (And LA, up till now) But will he get the same retrospectal scrutiny? Crazy, agree with the "worst decision in the history of the sport" sentiment.
  8. If you want a fast roller - WTB Vulpine. Period. I got some Crossmarks just to get some rear grip after that one!
  9. Smart recording is not as "frequent" and as per second recording - and definitely not as consistent and smooth. So if consistency is the key - then per second will be better. AFAIK smart recording only records significant change (and I don't know what their definition of "significant change" is...) and produces a much smaller and more manageable file (esp ito uploading) I will read around a bit and shout if I find something.
  10. Tried mine out over the weekend and I can say I'm very happy! I'm still recovering after a bit of an illness and don't know how that may have influenced this weekend's values - but hey, at least I'm starting to see values. What I can see from my non-expert point of view. It does not slavishly follow HR trends. So there is some other mojo in there and it's not "purely HR based". Unlike was reported on one site I saw, mine does zero out whilst coasting. Not sure how immediate - I was on the mtb, with no cadence sensor to evaluate afterward. One thing I want to ask - I have my 705 set to smart recording and have read that per second recording is advised for PowerTaps themselves. Is this the case here as well? (I simply turned off per second to decrease upload size of files.) So, there may be some inaccuracy if you compare it to PT, but I don't have a PT to compare it to. Which makes me pretty much the customer this was made for. I now have power values to look at - and already saw some interesting things - and use as guidance. As long as the magic inside remains the same, at least I know when I am evaluating myself against myself, I have a constant reference point - which I did not have before. Very interested to see what pops out once I get my lazy butt on a road bike for a change, where the riding will be vastly different.
  11. CAAD8, preferably CAAD 10... Not sure about plastic Dale pricing, so I won't go there - but there are several options as well.
  12. How long a ride will it be from Paarl? In the dark, with a bakkie, for somebody (obviously) not knowing the way there! (So no, not looking for your PB's with your GTI's! )
  13. Yeah, but last year we had it just the other way around! Some rain in the week, then awesome weekends! We could really rack up the miles then. Hey, it beats water restrictions! And we keep the economy going consuming some red wine! Ja, we also keep the bike shops going riding in mud, but heck, boys will be boys... Seems I'm a regular ray of freakin sunshine this morning. Must be because it's Friday on a Wednesday!
  14. +1 on this. Getting it into the website is the "trick" - they simply take everything from there. The fact that they're not aware that it can't be done differently, doesn't mean it can't be done differently. (Because the website is supposed to only take the workouts directly from devices.) That said, I have seen funnies in my data, esp wrt speed - it may have been the export I used that stuffed it ever so slightly.
  15. Scottondale - I think you're referring to the Fast Jacket...? Which used to be much like the Jawbones, but without that fugly bottom section. (Sort-of like Jawbones meet Jacket-range.)
  16. Stuff garish... it's almost exact copies of Merida colourschemes! It's crazy, surely Merida will have a bit of a beach about this...? The middle one looks almost exactly like my 96 - and the bottom one resembles the high-end 96 colourscheme. WTF?!
  17. Andy, you can to it without worry - and like K said, you can undo it as well. It's do-able per ride, so if it goes bananas on one ride, just toggle it on for that one. Mine (705) frequently goes nuts in thick fog and sometimes rain. I actually found out just the other day my house (on a hill...) is actually at -185m. Imagine... And it's accurate. It may miss small things, but once the baro has gone belly-up, whatever that gives you is way more accurate!
  18. Picked up on this now. My solution: Sporttracks has "export to HRM" add-on (free in old ST version). Export the file, import into PPT (optional). Then there's the above-mentioned free tool that can upload HRM's to the Polar website. That said, I stopped doing it a long time ago. Too much hassle for too little gain. SA-Active is free and you're up to the max in fitness points before you blink your eyes.
  19. Yeah, saw that and thought I'd be more than happy if I did that on a road bike! Same with 42's, also some sub 1 1/2 hour rides there, if I remember correctly.
  20. Yeah, I'd agree the most recent should be at the top. But if you look a bit down you'll see all kinds of interesting things.
  21. Was I in the only group/couple of guys that got to a dead end in the single-tracks in the 42? We saw the track below, went there and got going, only to find were going in the wrong direction. Added value for money! Enjoyed my day out there, it was fun!
  22. Dave, you can't go wrong with any of the Ergofit system guys - and there's some good options in your area, as mentioned above. Splat, though I agree with you - Renay is just more often than not more readily available (you can get an appointment on shorter notice).
  23. Thanks Barend - that helped me start understanding it a bit better... Which means I'll most likely add cadence meter to mtb as well, which was something I was contemplating more for interest sake than anything else.
  24. Well that then confuses the daylights out of me. I somehow have a HR max which is quite high. You see my confusion? If this is HR based and I ride at 170, I am in zone 3 and far from maxing out, whereas Kiepie next to me is near cardiac arrest if he reaches 170, yet for us travelling along at the same effort and speed, he is then sitting at... say 150 or 155. Trust me - I want to understand this, not undermine the product with my stupid reasonings. So don't get my motivation for asking the question wrong, please! I'd actually like to get one because it looks like something that will be good enough more likely than not for my use.
  25. This bring me back to a question I asked a while ago. What is your "input" into this to get it to gauge power for your HR values? Surely you have to at least supply your HR max...(?) (Since I understand this no longer requires calibration of sort, but that may be me misunderstanding it to begin with.)
