Posting wheels from CT to JHB...the best way???

Recommended Posts

So, i'm trying to get my new wheelset from my folk's place in CT to JHB. Including the box and everything the package weighs between 3-4kg.

Whats the best way to get it sent? I have seen a couple of posts on here that have said wheels costs about R250 to send. Is this realistic?

Any opinions and advice would be very helpful as i'm dying to get them on the trail!

There are 1000's of cyclists in CPT heading back to Jozi as we speak, why not just ask someone to bring it back for you???

I would love to but unfortunately I don't know any of them! I shall post a thing on here in the hope that someone looks and feels generous!

Send it with SAPO... Will cost about R50 and I have never had a problem with them. You get a tracking number and all. Add insurance if you want to when you send it (2% of the insured value), but I don't bother. Courier's are about R250+

Thats R50 for two wheels in a large box? That would be amazing. I have got quotes from a number of couriers, the cheapest being R500 for a slow road courier taking a week.

I send wheels off all over the country all the time. SAPO never failed me in that regard.

Yes their front offices suck.

Yes their staff suck.

Yes their attitude sucks

Yes their track and trace website is always down.

But so far I haven't lost a single wheel or had a customer receive a damaged product.

It is cheap if you send it ordinary mail.

Time Freight charged R250 for a whole bikefrom PE to PMB. They collected at my door and delivered to the recipient's door. Wheels should be cheaper.

100% Correct!!!

Pack your item expecting it will be thrown into a big transport bin with a lot of other parcels.

Insure it

Put lots of fragile stickers and nice hand written please don't drop warnings

If possible put your item in a oversized box relative to the item size and pack those old newspapers round it like crazy!

Got a quote from one post office, they said R250 not including insurance. the Post office by my parents said they don't even deal with parcels of that size and said it'd cost R1000 as they have to work out the charge for the volume of the box, which comes out to an equivilant of a 32kg package....not convinced at all.

So settled on a 2-3 delivery which costs R300 door to door.

I've also had that experience with Time Freight - Very Cheap (they charge as per actual weight and not volumetric weight , volumetric weight on a bike is a killer - most other couriers charge on whichever is highest).

BUT

Apparently they do not offer insurance - Is that true?

I was told by TimeFreight you need to use your own insurance - ie your own personal all risks cover or business cover etc
