I realise it is a conceptual idea, but surely it will compromise air flow into the engine intake.

Yip, that's why RBR is saying F1 will need to make a call in the 6-8 weeks so it can be incorporated into the 2017 design. 

 

Driver cooling will come into play as well. Riciardo reported a lot less buffeting and wind noise.

Off topic I know, but, modern gaming is pretty realistic.

I am driving one of these in a race series in Project Cars. It is insane.

Took the boost up to 6Bar and it is verging on uncontrollable. If it is anything like the real deal then  take my hat off to the drivers of that era. The current drivers have it easy with all the aids and assists!!!!
