Well I live in Somerset West and we have some hard core uphills on our roads. I just find it ironic that I no longer see road bikes on taking them on, its guys on their MTBs :) ... I think MTB give you more guts even when just riding on tar as you can easily bunny hop the curb and cut shortcuts through fields.

What do you mean? I do Irene, Helderberg Collage, Paarl Valley, Steenbras, Pump station all on the roadbike.

When I do them on the MTB it takes a lot looonger but I am sure it makes me stronger cause the bike is heavier :D

I wouldn't like to cycle up Irene without that granny gear.

Road bike 39/23 no problem!

Edit - Ok it is tough, but I get up there!

It'll blunt your sprinting speed a bit but it'll increase your ability to suffer and your ability to *** off in the gutter (and TT but thats effectively the same as the guttering).

I also agree that road riding helps your MTB - on the road you can choose when and how to do your interval training - mtb terrain makes interval training more difficult.

They are complimentary to each other - as long as you bear in mind the sprint thing. Add a few sprint exercises if you replace road miles with mtb miles during training.

I do both with a but of running and it serves me well.

Maybe slower by seconds, but stronger by miles.

Ah thats not strictly true - you can win plenty flat sa road races by hiding in the bunch and launching your sprint at the end.

Weaker rider but race winner!

There are few races in Jhb where there are enough hills to burn off the sprinters.

Only if you use your MTB on the road...

Are you joking? (this is a serious question)

Why would riding your mtb on the road make you slower on your road bike? Surely if you keep your leg speed up, you won't lose any speed?

Seriously it is slower riding your MTB on the road....... even if you replace the tyres with slicks :)...........

MTB will make you stronger and a better climber ........ hence im switching to MTB for the winter .........

in my limited MTB experince all i did was go up hill ..... yep i walked a few....... then there was the decent on the gravel road and sharp corners......... MTB will only make you a better cyclist ( yes and friendlier  )

enjoy cycling no matter what dicipline you do .........
