That's the one big problem with pepper spray, most criminals have a good puff to give them the guts to do the crime.

Apparently these are pretty good: http://www.piexon.com/

Also thought a knife was a good idea at one point, but figured - as per AirBender - the "other party" has the element of suprise and as such I'm likely to get said knife used on me. Or, I fall on the ride and it ends up in my arse or something... no thanks!

I've had one of those batons mentioned earlier in this thread for some years now. Nice to keep in your car, but weighs a ton, so prepare to negate all the nice weight savings you just got dropping R4k on carbon blingy bits.

Carry nothing anymore, but insurance policy is up-to-date and correctly valued. Still think it's worth having some sort of last resort weapon though, just in case the perpetrator(s) decide that you should accompany them. Sharpshooter in Sandton City have got a good selection of those plastic bladded "stabbing things" (can't really call them knives) which don't ever rust and will sure as hell do the damage required as a last resort - you'll hopefully only ever need to use it once. Cheap too.

PS. These Piexon things are not "sommer" any pepper spray - designed for law enforcement, I think that they can put down the druggies pretty well too!

I have a few of these lying around the house and in the car. It is light and takes around 30 mins to make one. It will really hurt. All the weight is in the head so it fits in your shirt pocket and doesn't fall out. You can make any length you need.

The wip section slides out when you swing it. Long enough to even keep a chasing dog at bay. Only hit them if you really have to. This will draw blood.

I see alot of guys carry pepper spray, but my question is, where do you carry it, because in most cases you only have afew seconds to get it out and spray the mullets

Yep, in my first bikejacking, there was no time to grab the pepperspray on my handlebars during the surprise attack. Even if you are alert, there are times when your concentration will wander to the ride itself, and perhaps even just battling to breathe during intervals or sucking on some gel. I now keep it on my shorts so that at least I have it on me even if I'm off the bike

guy's seriously.....a weapon is only as good as the hands it is in!

If you are going to carry ANY kind of weapon....BE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO 1) USE IT 2) STOP THE OTHER GUY FROM USING IT AGAINST YOU!

Ride in safe areas, and for DOG sake learn to protect yourself without a weapon where possible!

 Nicely put! Knowing how to use your weapon is PARAMOUNT!!!!

Your mindset should also be right, be prepared to use force and maximum force if necessary.

Personally, I carry a pistol. :D

A piece of 25mm condute, 3-4mm thick cable folded in half so it fits inside the tube. Cast some lead on the tips of the cable ends. Drill a 10mm hole into a block of wood and use that to cast the lead.

Insert the folded cable into the tube and fit a bolt through on close to the end of the tube to keep the cable inside. It is important to allow enough space between the bolt and the tube tip for the lead ends. The bolt also prevents the lead ends to go inside too deep, keeping the cable inside and to prevent it from falling out the bottom.

It is actually easier to make the cable first and then cut the tube to length. Also fit a small piece of wire on the cable bend to prevent it from sliding past the bolt when you are swinging the whip.

The wife also wanted one, but I refused. If your attacker takes this thing off you, you might end up bleeding quite a bit. If don't have the confidence to defend yourself with a weapon, don't carry one.

You could do that, but most of us are weight concious.

The idea of the design is that the cable does not whiplash and hit you on the knuckels. That is why the cable will always be slightly shorter than the condute.
