I have taken your guys advice and bought a second hand bike for cheap just so that I can start with the bike riding and entering competitions. I bought a 2006 Mongoose Tyax Comp. Was this a good Idea?

I know this is not the best buy ever but at least it is a bike that I can use and it was cheap.

I just want to know by you guys is this an ok Bike, was it worth R1700?

I am just doing 10km races for now and I am saving to buy my self a Merida Matt 800 or 1000

is it worth it to upgrade this bike abit maybe some better rims or Disc brakes and so on?

Please let me know what you think.

I appreciate all the help you guys have given me this far.

Dont upgrade your bike if you are saving towards something better.

It is very costly to upgrade it.

Rather keep the money and get the new bike quicker.

I think any bike is good to start on,

as long as you ride and enjoy it.

what’s the question?

1. Did you do the right thing by purchasing the bike and the value of this bike - my opinion Yes, not a bad buy.

2. Should you upgrade the bike or ride it to death and replace it with the Merida when you can - no, do not upgrade it, kill it and buy a better bike later.

 - She be what I started all over again on bud!

And having been unable to part with her am now building the frame up as a 1x9. Only upgrade I made quite quick back then was disc brakes and a reasonable front fork.

And those same components are still knocking around.

Once you have ridden it (and there is no need to ride anything to death) you will have a better idea of what you might like in a bike.

PS - I still prefer hardtail.

Go out and have a blast!

Happy riding!

As all have said - R1700 seems to be a fair price... That's a bit less than half you would've spent on a decent entry level bike, so now you've got money 'put-away' for the new bike...

Ride this one as hard as possible - given what you paid for it, you shouldn't feel to guilty about that... Don't bother selling it when you done - hang on to it, and the frame, you never know when you might have the urge to start pottering around with it in a few years time... [think SS etc.]

I wouldn't worry about upgrading now - not worth it... Save up for a decent 2nd hand or new bike - and by then you'll have a fair idea of what you should be looking for...

Nothing wrong with that. I ride a GIANT ROCK and its GIANT equivalent to this. Don't be put off its V-Brakes as they are cheaper to run than disc and more reliable than cheap disc brakes.

Just check that your wheels are true, spin them and watch the gap between the v-brake pad and the rim. You should not see any variance in distance. If you do, then take them to your local bike shop (LBS) and have it trued, it should not cost you more than R200 for both wheels. Your bike will be 100% perfect then.

It looks like the bike was ridden around the block and then stored till you purchased it.

Just learn how to clean, lube and maintain your bike (ask away on the hub when in doubt) and your bike will give you many thousands of kms of pure pleasure.

Enjoy

+1 on what Mr. Brundson said - you might want to lose those bullhorn/bar-ends though - will instantly make your bike look 5 years younger :D !

For the rest, looks to be in good nick - so reckon you've got your value for money!

Ride it hard - and reward yourself in 6 months/a year from now, when you're sure the bug has bitten, with what you really want!

Happy riding - don't fuss about it - just ride!

Thanks guys

I will consider removing the bullhorns/bars.

I did take the bike in for a service and according to the owner the bike is 100%

I will buy some chain lub next week but I have bought everything I need to ride races so I should be set.

You can get yourself some clipless pedals and shoes next as you can migrate it to your new ride in the future. A nice cheap set of clipless pedals will cost you about R250 and shoes can be anything from R500-R2500.

I got these pedals from Chain Reaction Cycles: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=54823

Cost me less than R300 with import duties and delivery. Else Shimano pedals from Chris W are also really great: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-pdm-520-pedals
