Really wish that there was just one size wheel 26",27.5"or the 29".

Then we can all just go back to ride to the best of our ability??

Have some fun out there,it's just a bike and it will only be as good as you are!!

Was I just dreaming, or were the Trek team at Jonkershoek last weekend? I though we drove past Emily Batty on her way out, but now I see she's doesn't ride for them anymore? Who was the good-looking blonde pro girl on the hot bike then? So many questions!

this is something i was concerned about, going from a plush dual to a hardtail, I rode 4 hours last weekend and can honestly say it was more comfy than I expected, I am no petite chap, so it did surprise me.

i did notice the legs got a bit more tired going down long technical hills, going to have to ride looser down hills, I have been spoilt with the stumpy and how it goes downhill

See my comment above - to me it definitely has a much higher potential to go over the front, especially if like me, you are not that skilled on the tight, downhill stuff. Luckily I have decided that selling the 26er is going to be a massive loss, so I'll use the horses for courses approach!

i can confirm! went over the bars at Teak last sunday, overshot a corner and went into that thick grass, ass over face.....must have been a funny site if anybody saw!

Mark, I think I saw you there! We're you the guy in the white Assos?

Anyway, must agree with your review. You have to kick a bit harder when you start a steep climb but once you've got momentum you're flying.

Will do a bit of a write up on my new steed under buyers guide...

yeah that was me, the fat guy in white!

Thanks Mark. Can you tell us do both bikes weigh the same, are both hardtails. My thinking is 29 ers are faster but anybody over 30 should be riding a dual (unless you a racing snake) and the 29er dual is not the cheapest.

No the niner was about 1kg heavier than my s-works, I was running xx on the s-works and had X9 on the niner and heavy bars, I have now put the xx on the niner and lighter bars, sitting at 11.2kg now.

I was ver surprised how comfy the 29er was, i am a big guy and rode a stumpy before, which is like a couch, so comfy. rode 4 hour last weekend and no problems

a mate of mine has an air niner carbon coming in at about 9.3kg I was going to get a niner jet and it was a fairly well specced bike Large and it was only coming in at 12.5 kg and they reckon I would struggle to get it under 12kg without spending serious cash, I went with the Anthem 29er and am sitting 12kg for a large and I reckon I can chop off 500 by changing the wheels and my saddle but to be honest I dont feel I need it the bike just wants to go

9.3! wow, im still sitting on 11.2 and im running xx but got heavy rounds for my heavy stomach!

At last we have identified the problem, white assos bib shorts :( :( :( , on a mountain bike, no wonder the 29er feels better. Almost like a road bike...............

i know..i know....and it gets worse.....i had riser bars with bar end on then as well!

had to try the assos bibs, just got them and wanted to see if they were worth me selling my housemates hifi to buy them.

Stevief - I think you are mistaken? The new standard as I've heard it is 33ers, with a dropped saddle/top tube interface, which allows the rider to sit even more 'in' the frame, and of course the increase of 4 inches over a 'stock' 29er is close to the oiriginal jump in rolling size from 26" to 29"?

Unsure if you've heard about that?

;)

there is actually a kit your can buy now that just clips onto the 29er wheel to increase the size.........

Thanx for a great post, Pls help me on deciding, will a 29er be better for a kid that climes well and is tall,1.92m. Im not sure which way to go, he has a 8.3kg HT but battles to stay on speed over long flat corrigated rides, Ive read that it should be faster but wont the size and weight be a negative right now for a youngster. Thanx

I think it is important to build a technical ability base before jumping on the 29er and if you kid is still young I would probably keep him on the 26 for a while. the 29er does make technical riding much easier but it can only improve on what skills you already have.

why not look at his gearing and see if you cant get some more speed on the flats from pushing slightly longer gearing.

also consider him growing (if he can grow longer than 1.92m!!)

thats just my 2 cents
