Seriously okes...this is a little old now..

If you want a red bike buy a red bike, if you want a white one then get a white one.

29er, 26er, HT Dual SUS, 100mm travel 120mm 160mm, 1.95 wide tires, 2.1 2.3 2.5... Shimano Sram - there are multiple choices for every rider.

Is anyone out there on their MTbikes still having fun? Or are we all just concerned that we don't have the bleeding edge bike to ride?

PS cant we all just get along.

You are so wrong a red bike is so last year , white bikes have been proven to go faster when attached to your bike rack thus making it quicker to get to your ride and thus finishing the ride faster than the guy in the red bike.

What? Another 29er thread?

Personally I just think it's the latest gadget/invention/technology so everyone is still getting their head around it. Remember how hard tail versus duallie was discussed ad nauseum? Then the tubeless versus tubes (although that was a short one!). Carbon versus alu? Hell - even toestraps versus clipless was contencious...

The winner was running hand stitched Dugast tubbies on carbon rims but no-one is asking whether tubbies are faster than tubeless. Second was a 26 hardtail tubless. Third was a 29er duallie tubeless. Which was faster? On the day a 26" running tubbies.. Next round it might be a 29er hardtail, 26 duallie or shock and horror a 29er duallie running Dugast tubbie!!!

Personally it's just another choice?.Me - I'm happy to have more choice. More choice rocks. I like the idea of having "larger" wheels for my large frame. I like them.

Azonic - Sauser was the only Spesh rider on a 26" and he got beaten by Burry, Todd AND Jaroslav on 29ers! Quick! Sell your 26 :D

Horses for courses I say - me - I think I would have been on a 26 HT for that course (and I would have taken the left line down the rock garden). For the Epic I would have been on a 29er duallie. Sanie2C/SabieX I reckon a 29er HT would be the choice.

Embrace the additional options I say instead of trying to poo poo a technology with ifs, buts and maybes.

just add some hype and marketing and BOOM we all need a second mountain bike.

can you hear it?

just here?

a bit further?

yes, it's the IPAD3, which makes the IPAD2 redundant, but only once sales start dropping.

Take that same argument across to the Sony Playstation story:

PS3 is clearly superior to PS2, BUT PS2 still sells more than PS3 internationally, with many more games available.

Maybe sometimes newer, and arguably better (certainly different), is not always preferable.

think thats more because u can chip ur ps2 and buy games from the flea market ?

wonder if u can chip ur 26er then buy from the 29er shelf ? :P

topic redundent squash it , lets go back and start a 24" vs 36" redundancy check

I am in the fortunate position of having a 26" dual suspension as well as a 29" dual suspension.

Both have given me alot of joy to ride and are definitly a different riding experience. So I wake up in the morning and decide what route to take then decide which bike to take. It's awesome!!!

Only problem, Sani2C coming up and which bike do I take...... :o

I am with Eldron and all the other 29er owners on this one... it boils down to a choice. I own 2 mountain bikes. The one is a dual suspension Merida 96 Team 26er with top-end components and weigh in at 10.5kg. The other one is a Specialized Stumpjumper S-Works 29er HT, also with top-end components and the weight is 9.5kg. My point : Both bikes are in my opinion great and the one is in terms of components and value not inferior to the other. So when it comes to riding these bikes, I make a choice based on terrain and purpose of my ride, not because the one is better than the other.

It is also worthy to mention that I own two vehicles, a LDV and a sedan. Taking a cruise, my choice of transport is my Audi, but transporting goods, my Corsa Utility is very handy, and better.

My take on this topic is that the 29er is faster on my morning tarmac training ride, as well as non-techinical terrain. The 26er beats the 29er on rough stuff, and is quicker on acceleration when I need it. I love both bikes, and consider myself fortunate to have a choice when it comes to my mtbiking and my motorised transportation mode.

What I have noticed is that all the cyclists (or bicycle riders for that matter) who are yet to convert to big wheels, are very negative towards this move, and offer various reasons why 29ers are not great, until they finally take the plunge. Very seldom a 29er rider will bad mouth his ride, given the fact that chances are great that he or she started on a 26er, and have first hand experience of the two options availble to mtbikers. Instead our favourite forum is flooded with bulsh*t from people with very little experience on a topic, and have absolutely no clue what they are speaking of.

One day in the very near future (heaven forbit, cause I still love my small wheeled Merida) 26ers will be posted on this forum together with steel framed bikes, and everybody will post ' that is soooooo sexy', velly velly pwety!!!!! and 'sweeeeeeet ride, just love the old days' .

Until then, lets all enjoy cycling and forget about small peni wheel syndrome!

I'm also very fortunate to have both a 26er and a 29er, the second one is called a road bike and we seem to use them in a similar fashion.

Sjoe, glad I'm not getting left behind on the 29er trend..

Yes, its slow going this friday..

Hey chicken, have you never seen a mtb riding on the road, on the way to single track? So if you use your road bike to ride jeep track, and other non-technical terrain you must be very desperate to ride on big wheels, and also look very stupid!

I was just saying my 29er is faster on my morning tarmac training ride.. no wait, that is what you said..

How do you think I get to my favourite trail, carry my bike for 15km on my back. Getting to my trail is part of my training dude, and getting there is about 5 min quicker on bigger wheels! Do one have to spell out every single move to be understood by a chicken!

Not sure how you get to your favourite trail partly because I don’t know you, where you live, where the aforementioned trail is in relation to your unknown place of domicile or your preferred method of transport which could be your MTB, your 29er road bike, the LDV or the Audi. Guess there are many options really, but by your implied sarcasm I'm guessing that you don’t carry your bike for the 15km on your back?

But, dude, to spell it out for you, if I talk about my "morning tarmac training ride" (as per your post) it is a ride, in the morning, on tarmac. And only tarmac. As you said, and I agree 100% that this is where the 29er is king. You might look at flogging that Stumpjumper and getting the Tarmac as it is a bit heavy at 9.5kgs..

Should the ride include a tarmac section to a MTB trail, I'd talk about my morning MTB ride.

Forget to mention, I do own a 6.5kg Tarmac also, so I might as well keep the Stumpy.

OFFS ... just ride whatever bike you want.

I have a 29er and I love it and I think it is better for me, but if you do not like a 29er, or a 26er is better for you, then ride your 26er .

Why is everybody so keen to knock everybody else's choices?

Schurter did not win because he was on a 26er, he won because he was the best on the day ... and Kulhavy came third because he was third best on the day, not because he was on a 29er. Burry did not crash because he was on a 29er, he had a *** day and crashed (twice) because he made two mistakes and all the other guys and girls who crashed did so because they made mistakes ... on both 26ers and 29ers.

Get over it ... anybody in their right mind knows a 26er had advantages in some areas and a 29er has some advantages. So some courses / rides / races will suit 26 and some 29.

Now lets just go have some fun on whatever bike you A) have; B) enjoy; C) suits you and D) want to ride.
