My rear wheel has a very small amount of lateral play when you move the wheel to and fro in the frame.

 

Can this be bearings that need to be torqued ?

I believe there's a special mavic wrench to be used, any idea where I can find one, or who the local importers are ?

 

The freewheel hub sounds fine and the cassette is running nice & straight. Have no idea when they where last serviced or mileage as I got them on a used bike. :unsure:

usually the bearing pre load needs to be adjusted, the is a circular nut that turns with that special tool, take it to a bike shop and let them do it for you its a quick painless job.

 

I'll have a dig around and see if I don't have an extra 1 laying around.

Bump.

 

I have the same problem with my bike after the weekend's Imvelo classic in swaziland. There is a little bit of play on the rear wheel from side to side. Yesterday I took the wheel off and it also feels like there is a bit of play on the casette. I don't have the tools to tighten the casette or the bearings, and I'm 4 hours away from the closest proper LBS. So I'm stuck..

 

Which tools should I order online and try do it myself? Or is the safest bet to try get it to a shop to someone who knows what they're doing?

 

Can I ride my bike like that or is it not advisable?

I know this is not the answer you want, but use google and youtube, there you will surely find the correct info you need. There is proper tutorials by expert mechanics.

 

I do it all the time when something on my bike stumps me.

Mecnic is on the button I believe. I had exactly the same lateral play on my Crossmax XLs. Fortunately, the tool to tighten the preload ring is included in the packaging if you bought recent Mavic wheelsets, or wheelset systems.

Tightened it up and the play was gone. Hasn't come back since, despite much riding.

 

If you don't have the tool, your LBS should be able to assist. It's a job that takes just a few short minutes. Apparently, a Parktool pin spanner works just as well.

A bit more agricultural, but a few appropriately sized nails with heads sawn off, and spaced apart correctly, into a piece of board, would do the job just fine as well.

The hub and axle is not properly installed. Each hub is slightly different and has its tricks to get things right.

 

So I agree, try to google and youtube how your hub is put together, take it apart, service it and install properly again.

 

If the bearings are faulty you will feel it if you spin the wheel and hold the axle. You can feel some vibrations. Bearings can be used until they are in in pretty bad shape. So the cause of the problem is unlikely the bearings.

Youtube gets blocked by the work server, and internet through phone networks is waaay too slow to play videos. And technically, posting here is almost as good as googling it  ^_^

I have mavic elites (road wheel), if you undo the locking nuts on the axle, the hub falls apart, I seem to remember. There are no internal locking nuts (one some hubs there is one in the centre of the hub where you need to push a big alan key down where the axle goes). You need two very flat spanners of the right size. If you don't put it together properly, there is play in the wheels. You would be able to feel the bearings directly to see if they have play in them.
