I think Alpina were part of the same stable of locally built bikes that included the Peugeot, Hansom and Le Turbo brands.  Right to use the name was purchased and bikes built locally.

I would have no hesitation riding one but they will be much heavier than modern bikes of any material.

I am riding a Basso steel frame and love it. Had 3 steel frames before and also enjoyed riding with them. The one aluminium frame I had in between was sold very fast again!

If I ever have the money I'll get a custom made MTB steel frame from crosstown cycles in Wynberg or even better from german's cycles!

Currently riding an aluminium MTB frame.

steel is the way to go!

I don't think Hansom were part of that stable (wasn't that Gotty Hansen?). If i remember correctly Alpina, Zini, Le Turbo were the same crowd as Deale and Huth that were so huge in the late 80's. They were even listed on the JSE. They used to manufacture the bikes in Hammanskraal. Not sure what happened to them.

I've been riding a steel Bianchi (Columbus OS tubing) for the past 10yrs and only recently upgraded to a carbon Solis (2 months ago). I can honestly say that for rides over 100km's, the Bianchi blows the socks off the Solis. Steel is way more forgiving on the body. However, the Solis climbs like a scaulded cat because it rigid & light.

My next road bike will definitely be titanium as I believe you'll be getting the best of both worlds Thumbs%20Up

Steel is REAL for me. Still ride my steel Pegoretti more than any of my other bikes. Dario Pegoretti is a legendary frame builder and it's worth the 6 months waiting period to own one of his frames.

Those frames are real works of art. Dario Pegoretti is being treated for cancer so there is an even longer waiting period for his frames. Hopefully he pulls through, it would be a shame to lose such a craftsman.

Bruce Reyneke Cycles in Lynnwood, Pretoria actually have a 'old school' Sunday ride. Only old classics allowed; steel frames, down shifters, old ALAN alu, Vitus Alu etc. You have to see some of these bikes! Absolutely AWESOME!!!!
