Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted November 9, 2015 Share Silver Protea on the Silver Tree. First time I have ever seen one of these last week even though the are only found in the Cape Peninsula. Numbers are down from around 7000 in the late 1970s to around a 1000 trees in 2005. The Silver Trees were planted and harvested in the 17th and 18th centuries mainly for firewood. The trees grow quickly, up to 8m in 10 years but have a relatively short livespan of only 20 years. Today it is a Rare, Endangered and Protected species. An extensive management program of alien eradication and planting of silvertree is going to be taking place (actually, is) Puts the closure into a bit more perspective, innit?
