Silver Protea on the Silver Tree.

 

First time I have ever seen one of these last week even though the are only found in the Cape Peninsula.

 

Numbers are down from around 7000 in the late 1970s to around a 1000 trees in 2005.

 

The Silver Trees were planted and harvested in the 17th and 18th centuries mainly for firewood. The trees grow quickly, up to 8m in 10 years but have a relatively short livespan of only 20 years.

 

Today it is a Rare, Endangered and Protected species.

FWIW, this is what is resident in Tokai. And what we are hoping comes back after the fire. An extensive management program of alien eradication and planting of silvertree is going to be taking place (actually, is) 

 

Puts the closure into a bit more perspective, innit?

Perna-Perna on the left of the traffic circle as you enter Umdloti.......seriaaaaas lekker holidays there.

Used to go there every weekend to swim in the little tidal pools and look at the fish. Used to be tons of different species...
