Flemish Lion Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 Have a couple of friends commuting with bikes, they stay off the highway. Roodepoort - Sandton city, 25min. I'd love to stay off the highways too, but NorthCliff (near Gordon Rd) to Midrand (near New Rd) - not easy to take "back" roads...
TNT1 Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Have a couple of friends commuting with bikes, they stay off the highway. Roodepoort - Sandton city, 25min. I agree. I generally try and avoid the highway in my daily commute.
dirtrider Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Youngster got killed on backroad this morning on his small bike . On the back roads if you hit something they normally come from the front . I don't lane split if traffic moves at over 60kmph , then I get into a lane a relax . When they slow down split the lanes but keep speed at 60km . I you do need to make emergency stop or whatever there enough time to react . And please just because you on a bike does not mean you got to behave like a BMW driver !! Use you indicators .
Bman Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 That's option 2. I agree that legally that is the correct place - but by NO means the safest place. Do you know of anyone ever getting a fine for riding in the emergency lane on the right, i.e. crossing a white line?hey man... im in durbs so traffic not near as bad but have had to sit in a few experiences where its crazy! So my input - i rode in that lil emergency lane on the right only to pick up so much **** off the road to have a piece of glass cutting my jeans and stabbing me in my one leg and enough lil glass bits to make their own unique patterns in my pirelli's! once i rode in the left hand side of the emergency lane when traffic was dead still cause of an accident ahead only to pic up a strange odd sharp piece of metal splitting my then michelin rear straight through and nearly throwing me off!! Stick to the lanes man - jump in and out of the fast and second and stay safe.. far easier and at much less risk of anything!

With a choice between the N12 and all it's concrete barriers, narrow lanees, construction lane surface changes, actual route changes, and the "back roads" I take the back roads. Ta.

dirtrider Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Sell the motorbike and buy a proper bike (one with pedals) You joking right ?
TNT1 Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 why do that when you can have both ahem, and more than one of each
RocknRolla Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 (edited) back roads for me as well. if i am forced to take the highway, then its between middle and fast lane in bumper to bumper.never in the emergency lane, never crossing the white barrier line on the extreme RH side. (that where the cages swerve to avoid a rear end when traffic comes to a sudden stop. In addition to all the debris. As for more dangerous to lane split - a reduced speed can greatly increase your reaction time.i have seen some dudes in the extreme RH lane doing speeds more suited to a track, also some lane split speeds that will even make rossi crap his pants. As for our new highways. the fastest lane certainly is the left hand lane, i see people doing 100 km/h in the middle lane, completely oblivious of the keep left pass right general rule of the road. (obviously in free flowing traffic. Edited June 13, 2011 by RocknRolla
Bman Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 ahem, and more than one of each couldnt agree more!!! loving your view

I even asked my wife the one day if she'd heard anything about the road laws being changed or anything. Bizarre. No, wait, make that terrifying.
