I hope this is the right forum.

I own a Landrover. I also,  for my sins have 4 kids. The wife and I recently started mtb riding. We are encouraging the kids to ride but what are the solutions to travelling with 6 bikes? The youngests bike I am not too concerened. My major issue is that which carrier will siute my vehicle and still allow for a trailer. Needs to carry a minimum of 4 bikes? Help?

I have 3 kids and a wife. I have custom built my own rack to fit on top of a Venter trailer. The rack was made and still used for a quad bike and later adapted to take bicycles. We are able to get between 4 to 6 MTBs onto the rack. The cost of the rack was less than R100 (steel, bolts and paint), doing my own welding etc. The quick release gadgets are the problem since they are in excess of R200 a shot. PM me if you need pictures or advice

Your only option is a bike rack on a trailer.  I personally avoid them at the moment because of the drag and the effect on fuel consumption.  But currently I only have to transport two bikes which fit into my boot fairly easily.  Should the little ones start cycling then that would be the route I have to take as well.

You can buy a five bike rack from bike caddy for something like 1200 or so.

Check their website but most cycling shops sell their products. http://www.hanlerproducts.co.za/

I am keen on the trailer idea, but not willing to spend in excess of R10 000 on a trailer + racks. Had two forum members reply to my post in the classified and have not heard from them again! I do not currently own a trailer, I normally hire and no one has a trailer with bike racks. Thanks for the advice though. Alex0072007-11-26 02:55:33

If your Landy can take a rooftop-tent for excursions into Africa, it can surely take same rack for a trailer on top of the vehicle. Most probably you would not be able to buy it off-shelf, like my quad bike rack, but it works. A hint of advice, rather have someone build it for you as it takes a few weekends to get to perfection.

You should be able to construct something that attaches to the roof rack, or body and also the towbar to spread the weight. It is a Landie after all. Sounds like a fun project. I mounted two holders on the inside and fold the rear seats up when I want to have two bikes inside and can still have 3 on the rack on the towbar.

Of course in your case the kids would have to sit on the roof. Wink

One bit of advice don't use the racks that strap onto the rear wheel - your rear door will start to take strain.
