Broken plastic ring on backwheel ( chain guard)

Guys the rond plastic wheel on my back wheel ( think its called chain guard ) broke during a mtb ride yesterday. Do i need to replace it or will i be ok without it? I replacement is needed where do i buy one, how much it cost and how do i replace ? I have. Silverback saturn.

Remove it, as long as the limits on your derailleur are set properly then you will be fine.

There are two little screws on your rear derailleur that control how far in and out it moves.

You can safely remove the plastic disk. It's sole real purpose is to stop stupid Americans from suing the bike company when the poorly adjusted rear derailleur on their bike goes into their spokes.

I have seen some noobs struggle next to the trail trying to break it off ... so here is your tip, remove the casette first! Then it slides off and your hands won't be bleeding

.. just how do I get the cassette off? I've been turning it for hours!

 

oh and noobs breaking it off on the side of the trail, please don't throw it in the bushes!

Oops, yea! To remove the cassette, you are going to need a cassette removing tool and a chain whip tool.

 

Guessing that noobs don't normally have these kinds of tools, take your back wheel to your LBS, that's a quick 5min job. 5min including chatting to the owner and browsing through the shop

 

At least offer them a beer for their services or bring it to me, I accept beer!

Why do you guys want to remove the cassette? Just cut the plastic away with side cutters, tear the last section

I don't have side cutters but I do have cassette remover & chain whip, priorities bru!

I have those as well, and a side cutter is utterly more usable and versatile. Nevermind cheaper

Depending on the plastic used it might not tear easily, I struggled a lot to get mine of with side cutters. Would have been easier to take the cassette off.

I've just heard that spoke protectors are in fashion this year in Paris. It is sure to spill over here very soon. I also believe Shimano has a range of them now, from SLX to XTR. The latter is apparently from transparent titanium.

 

I'm keeping mine on. For once I'm gonna lead the fashion.
