Mounting biking with protective gear??

After taking tumble last week on my MTB coming down a steep mountain stretch, I ended up 14 stitches on my knee.

If I was wearing Elbow and Knee guards, I would have a lot less scratches and bruises.

So I was wondering how many people out there actually use extra protective gear - beyond a helmet - when doing MTB riding.

The last time I saw people using these was when I raced BMX as child.

What are your thoughts?

kneeguards & fullface helmet for DH stuff. Maybe taking the kneeguards over for aggressive XC stuff.

Still need to get elbow/forearm guards

Yep!!! Basically you can go out there in a full biker leathers if you want. Its all up to you how much protection you want. Best bet is to protect the face and joints, as those take the brunt of the impacts of falls.

out on the trail, i dont leave home without knee guards and fullfingerd gloves that covers the wrist properly.

For DH practice: FF lid and neck brace + knee guards. Minimum. Sometimes, if it's a really rough stretch of track, chest and back protection.

It depends on the riding i am doing that day. Always gloves. Normally knee shin pads. Full face helmet and elbow pads for dh practice and racing. 661 make some cool soft knee pads that harden on impact. But the rest of the time you wont even know that they are there. Cost a bit though. . .

What is Mounting biking??? How similar is this to mountain biking, or a new sport. So you wear protective clothing whilst mounting your bike in case you fall off ??

Maybe it's something to do with this: Bike sex man in court.

Dress for the crash!! I ride DH so it may be an overkill for XC. Im one of the few that wears a chest protector and long pants for DH. I wear the usual knee guards etc and my upper torso has been saved many times by the chest protector during those nasty moments in the rock gardens.

i ride xc at majik forrest/hillcrest/contemanskloof/meerendal.i use helmet and full finger gloves and found those to be adequate.as for dh courses i would think go the full monty(not as in the movie)as it is of no use when you have a serious wipeout and think to yourself i have the equpment at home.

If you ride a trailbike or an all mountain bike and want to aggressively ride(rail the berms, do the jumps, at speed) tecnical singletrack (that counts almost all of Tokai in my book)then you should be wearing at least a XC helmet, full finger gloves, elbow pads and knee pads. It will feel weird the first time you try it, but will feel great the first time you walk away from a crash because of it. If you care to look around, you will notice that more and more adventurous riders are armouring up, so stop feeling self concious about it, you will be part of a new crowd before you know it.
