Golas has been caught and Casar is on the attack as they tackle this final climb. The Frenchman can sense both a stage win and the pink jersey. But after so long on the front, how much does he have left. And let's not discount Santaromita from the GC equation either.

Getting close to the end now. Descent has been completed. Casar needs a gap of 3.42 if he wins the stage as the 20-second bonus will take him top of the GC.

Casar and Santaromita need to go for it if they have designs on pink - the pelton will finish fast. 4:00 gap with 2km left...

All eyes on the gap to the peloton and who makes moves from there. Casar has bagged a 12-second bonus so needs a gap of 3:48 to take pink...

Joaquim Rodriguez crosses the line in an unofficial 3:37 - looks like he will keep the pink jersey but unconfirmed as yet

Casar is hurting somewhat after getting so close to pink...

Impressive fact below.

The last Frenchman to have worn the pink jersey was Laurent Jalabert in 1999.

Olivier Kaisen leads the fuga pinarello classification, which is awarded for the most kilometers spent ahead of the group. As of stage 11, the Lotto-Belisol rider rode 557 kilometers in three big escapes. He leads Miguel Minguez Ayala (Euskaltel-Euskadi) with 475 and Martijn Keizer (Vacansoleil-DCM) with 458.

557 - wow!

Except he says he was only after a stage win, and didn't give two hoots about some silly statistic.

“I only rode for the stage win”, he told Cyclingnews on the finishing line at Sestri Levante.

Yeah...

Still impressive historical fact though.

The French is a very proud cycling nation.

“At a certain point we were on the plane back home. I mean, I will never give up, if I’m out of time, I’m out of time. But it was tough. I told Cav twice just to keep thinking about Delilah.

“Yesterday he was on his hands and knees, and then he crashed as well, he was tired. “And I was like ‘that’s it, we’re not going to make it’. There were these long, long roads into a headwind and I was just giving it everything and I was like ‘just keep going.’ Then Jez came back and I was thinking ‘if he’s come back, that’s three of us going to go home.’

“But Cav was recovering really well, he was on the wheel for 20k and then he started dropping me because I was empty. And I just killed myself trying to get through on the last part.” “It was one of those Giro stages you just hate. All those small ramps [climbs], they were real bastards.

“As soon as you lost contact with the bunch, it became a day that was never-ending.”

“We were drilling it. For the last 20k I couldn’t see any more. I don’t know what I had, a heat-stroke. Then I had an asthma attack afterwards and I was lying on the bus for 30 minutes. Even the team doctor asked me if I wanted to go home. It was just one of those miserable days.”

BERNIE EISEL ON BATTLING TO FINISH WITH CAV, PHINNEY AND OTHERS, BEFORE THE TIME CUT AT YESTERDAY’S GIRO. THEY GOT IN WITH A MINUTE TO SPARE.

Sh&t your pants kids... pro cycling rules for just balls out toughness. When did you last don your fake Astana top and ride a route of more than 150kms of which 20kms you couldn't see.

You don't get that by worrying about suspension, if you should have 26 or 29 inches and only going downhill!
