Hey Guys

To the all knowing oracle, that is The Hub....

Cannondale used to make framesets from big tubing. Was the only frame I wanted when I was to upgrade from the le turbo frame.

What frames did they make before this ? What was the thinking at that time to make frames with such big tubing ?

Just scratching around for some info .....

All their frames have big tubing but I think it all started with the 3.0 and then 2.8. The think was that you can make the tubing thinner if you make it bigger.

Think BB30 and apply it to frame tubing, or is that think Cannondale frame tubing and apply it to a BB = BB30...

Those guys at Cannondale are so smart!

Big diameter, thin walls = Light and strong

Here we go again,

LIGHT

STRONG

CHEAP

Pick two, okay so that's why Cannondales cost allot!

they originally made touring equipment, then started making aluminium framed bicycles in the early 80's.

the story i read somewhere is that sometime in the 80's they employed some fancy engineer or the other to look into the prospect of this new fangled carbon fibre stuff for making frames. so the guy started by creating something to test a carbon frame against, i.e. the best al frame he could come up with. it turned out that the performance of that aluminium frame was so good that they decided to stick with the metal for the time being.

do the current models also have big tubing ?

and what did the frames look like before ?

Yes they do - but because all the other manufacturers also use big tubing they look pretty normal. When I first started cycling the Cannondale road bikes were instantly noticable because they were the only ones using big tubing. I don`t recall seeing a skinny Cannondale. :)
