No power!!!

Recommended Posts

 So I have noticed that at the start of a race, that i k@k off the first 10-15k I struggle to hold on to my group!. But i call it the second half of the race i can sit in-front and go like a train with no problems.

Am i doing something wrong not to have the power from the start?

I would welcome any advise

Do a warm up cycle before the race? maybe like 10-15min?

just go on the road, spin the legs a bit, use light gears at a cadence of around 100rpm, that way the muscles warms up quickly.

You could always ask the group to slow down while you're still warming up. :D

Cyclists are very understanding.

1. order new screen.

2. wipe mixed nasal secrections, morning rusk and tea mix from desk.

3. get new shirt!

A warm up ride before the race will help but its not the only answer, rather do interval training at least once a week, that will prepare you for a fast start and when the bunch decides to speed up

My wife and I were talking about this warmup thing just this Saturday.

So you warmpup before a race. So this tells your body to get ready. Then you go to your starting block and sit there for maybe 20min or longer. So your body starts to relax. Then the start gun goes off and your body is like: "WTF IS THIS NOW???"

So during training now these days, I don't warm up. I just gun for it. Does it help during a race? Yes I think so. That and the fact that I keep telling myself the other guys are also going through this and I just need to hold on a little longer - thing will settle down shortly!

It is really tricky to warm up and stay warmed up for cyclists I think.

If I remember from another post you did, you don't cool down after sessions either? Kind of spitting in the face of all the scientific research out there.

I agree that warming up before a race is difficult. The pro's have it easy riding up to the line 5 min before the start and getting a place in front. I still think there is a benefit to warming up, even if you cool down a bit.

I did some ergo-meter tests a few years back, on myself wife and kids and a few friends.

The difference in power output cold and warmed up for the same heartrate was over 30%.

I'm getting on in years so that +30% is the difference in staying with the bunch in the first 10km or not.

I warm up well and time it to get to the start with about 15 sec to go before the start.

MJ's got it right, you can warm up all you like but does not help when you cooldown waiting in the start gate, always used to p me off when you see some guys come back from their warm up ride a minute before tha start and push in at the front....and then you *** for the first 20 minutes trying to hang onto them.

So ja you need to get your mind/body/lungs/muscles used to it by simulating it during training. A good WU followed by a cool down period as per race day procedure would be better than just starting flat out from zero.

As far as cooldown goes there is a lot of controversy out there. I don't believe in cooldown. Period. Many years ago it was thought to be beneficial...These days it seems to be the opposite. For me a cooldown is rather getting home, taking a shower and hi-jacking the couch in front of the TV! I feel it is more important to rest as soon as you can after a race.

I would love to warm up. But warming up and STANDING in the start area for 20min just destroys the idea of what a warmup should be doing.

BTW, I also don't believe in streching before a race - that does absolutely NOTHING. :D

Also, if you don't warm up, you have more energy to shout at the riders in front of you
