What's your verdict on Axis bikes? The price is apealing and they seem to be well specced etc... It seems to me that all well priced, well specced bikes are heavy or have some sort of achilles heel. Is that the case here?

What would a similarly specced "big brand" bike sell for?

Can anyone please help with advice on the Axis A80? It retails for about R2500 which is the cheapest entry-level bike with mechanical brakes. How does it compare to a Mongoose Switchback Sport going for about the same price but with V-brakes. Which one should i choose? Please help. I can attach the specs of the Mongoose if need be. Here is the link to the Axis A89: http://www.axis-bikes.com/bikes/mtb-path-and-trail/a-80

at that pricepoint the v-brakes will probably be better.

but on the rest the axis will most likely outscore. you're paying for the mongoose badge, which is worth it. the axis brand is supposed to be a game changer at this level, but time will tell. take a risk and go for it, i think it will stand up fine.

I weighed one at my LBS the other day, the top of the line hardtail. It was actually lighter than a much more expensive Scott they had on the floor...

I really am anticipating the ride reviews of these bikes!

A well speced bike at a great price is one thing, but I would rather ride an ok specced GOOD/EXCELLENT handling bike instead .... even if it might cost a little more.

AAh! My first post and my first bike(with more than one gear  ): either an Axis A60 or a Silverback Stride 10. Both are approx R4k.

Many bike shops are not stocking the AXIS range, some of the reasons go something like: "....where we've had problems with the frames in the past....Issues with getting warranty's sorted for exchanges on the frames. Hence we don't keep them in stock anymore."

-Which is weird, since the bikes were just launched, if I'm not mistaken?

Small Cycle shop when asked their opinion on Axis: "It's just a rebrand of the Raleigh cycles, so its decent"

-Is this true?

Another store: "It's a relatively new brand, but their bikes are heavy, here feel this (hands me a heavy-feeling bike) thats about the weight of the Axis bikes. These other brands (Giant/Silverback) are much better/lighter frames."

-I'm not really sure how "light or heavy" these bikes are supposed to be....

I'm going to find a store where I can do a side-by-side comparison of the weight, but in terms of spec, the Axis SEEMS a bit better (My little knowledge doesn't help, But from what I've read, SLX means GREAT?)

Both seem to have Shimano M445 hydraulic disc brakes. Although Axis calls it BRM-445 (pics look a bit different too?)

Axis- Shimano: Aliveo 9 Speed shifters, Altus Front Derailleur, SLX Rear , HG20 11-30T cassette

Truvativ: Crankset 44-32-22, Bottom bracket

Suntour XCM v3 coil with Remote Lockout

Silverback - Shimano: SL-M310 8 speed rapidfire shifters, M311 Front derailleur, Deore Rear, M311 crankset, ES25 octalink bottom bracket, and HG31 11-32T cassette

Suntour XCR MLO 100mm (This is better)

Oh, and the Silverback looks cooler. But I dont mind that (or maybe i do,lol )

Based on all that (full specs at the links above), for an entry level person like me, and all the info I've been reading, its a bit daunting to be honest. Which seems like the better option? I really need some help.

Just bought an A70 for my son. Really nice, looks good with a good drivetrain (Acera/Alivio) and reasonable to half decent hydraulic discs. . The Suntour shock is OK although a bit sticky and not a lot of adjustment and there is a manual lockout.

All in all I think it was a good buy, a decent value for money entry level bike. There are noticeable money saving components - I didn't particularly like the stem which is just pressed steel with 2 threaded inserts for the bolts and the oversize seatpost is not fantastic. For 3K - don't think you would find better....

blank85, I saw one of those at Pheiffer Cycles a week ago, looks like a really sweet bike. I believe it was actually lighter than a more expensive Scott option...
