Ashes:

Jonathan Trott, the England batsman, has left the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness that he has been coping with for several years and will not return for the remainder of the series.

Trott departed Brisbane on Sunday night after England's 381-run defeat in the first Test at the Gabba. He fell twice for low scores against the short-pitched bowling of Mitchell Johnson and his ability to combat fast bowling came under heavy scrutiny.

"I don't feel it is right that I'm playing knowing I'm not 100% and I cannot currently operate at the level I have reached in the past," Trott said in a statement. "My priority now is to take a break from cricket to focus on my recovery."

Ignorant

Six Ashes Tests for Trott, three centuries, four victories. He averages a whopping 86.42 against the Aussies, against his overall Test average of 50.01.

I suspect that there may be more to it. The England dressing room has many internal conflicts and they have done a reasonable job of late to keep the conflict from the press (think of the whole KP saga last time SA toured England). The Aussie press smells weakness and thrive on things not being all kosher in the opposition dressing room and by sending a player home for mental health reasons probably takes the stuffing out of that side of the situation. The focus will now be on Trott, who will be 9500 miles away from it all.

The Aussies would have expected Trott to play and would have spent a lot of time working on their game plan against him. I doubt if Aus would have such a definitive game plan against Ben Stokes or Joe Root who looks like the likely replacements.

This also pours water on the Aussie sledging campaign as they will be under even more scrutiny from the umpires and match referee in the upcoming tests. Clarke being fined 20% of his match fee for inappropriate comments will also not help the Aussies' strategy.

exactly those stats dont lie and my comment had nothing to do with his batting ability, his a world class player no doubt but now in a spot of bother and throws in the towel

lacking some mental strength, maybe!?

bt as Gluvs said, def more to it then just a "stress -related illness" that has been bothering him for "several years"!

I would not underestimate the effect of some form of depression or other disorder if that is what it is

It can be fixed with counciling and medication. If it is just a dressing room spat it would have come out long ago

Those figures of his against Australia are excellent and speak of steel and consistency and for him to come out and throw his bat at every ball spells a problem. He just does not do that.

Anyway

He is a Capie and a Rondebosch boy so I am biased.Apart from the fact his dad was in my class :-)

I am afraid Kepler is an idiot and this article bears that out

I respect more the comments of the likes of Alan Border.

I have no sympathy for the English but I have no time for those insensitive to an individuals plight nor the spirit of the game

I saw a stat yesterday that was along the lines of

1st 20 test avg of 65

next 29 test avg of 33

In fairness his avg against Aus is great but I think we all know this is the Oz team of Harris, Lyon, Hughes et al and hardly the machine of the 90'2 and 00's. Warne, McGrath, Waugh, Waugh, Bevan, Gilly, Hayden ect.

Nice analysis of Trott and his current challenge as a human being and batsman.

For a man of Trott's background - raised in a macho environment where fears and insecurities are to be denied - to ask for help is a major undertaking.

Speaks volumes about us South Africans as a society. Sad really.

After a bit of an indifferent start, it's nice to see the Windies post a halfway respectable score.

Some good hitting by the two Darrens at the end there.
