I still think that we should have 5 bowlers and a part timer (JP),

that leaves no place for Berhardien.

my fifth would probably be Abbot even though he has bowled poorly in this series with Parnell as my backup. Both would only need to bowl 5-7 overs.

Riley has played well this series kind of, he is very hit and miss.

Go look how many games he has played and how many times he has scored less than 10.

This series was also very poor for SA before the WCup.

It was shown if you just hung around a bit you will get terrible balls and could really capitalize.

I would still have Faf as number 3 in other words.

U right about FB we u should rather play WP his a better option Thn Abbot

Faf is a good player but not consistent enough for me he had chances against a weak West Indies team but didn't take it, RR also not consistent enough however he is much more explosive. They probably could alternate the 2 depending on the opposition

i don't think they are even close to dropping Faf.

a)he's got a good record in Aus

b)he did get that killer 100 in the T20s so is not that out of form

c)he is AB's tjommie, I think that counts for a lot (well it did in the boucher/kallis days)

either way, I'm not worried about our batting. whichever 6/7 they pick out of the 9 they have will do the job fine. The frikken bowlers need are where our concern lies!

Cricket[edit]

The South African national Cricket team has gained a reputation as a frequent choker at global cricket tournaments conducted by the International Cricket Council. Despite being consistently one of the best-performing nations in all forms of cricket since its return from isolation, the Proteas have never progressed beyond the semi-final stage at a World Cup, nor won a game during the knock-out stage of the tournament.[30][not in citation given] This reputation arises largely from two events:

  • In the 1999 Super Six Stage, Herschelle Gibbs dropped eventual centurion Steve Waugh after which Australia went on to win the match,[31] then a shambolic run-out involvingAllan Donald and Lance Klusener in the semi-final also against Australia ended South Africa's second innings with the scores tied. Australia progressed on the basis of its superior run rate through the tournament.

In the Proteas' final game of Cricket World Cup 2003's group stage (which was effectively a knock-out match, as they had to win to progress to the super six), South Africa tied the rain-affected game against Sri Lanka which they could have won, after they misinterpreted the Duckworth-Lewis rain rule tables shortly before the match was called off.

In addition to surrendering commanding positions in the above matches, South Africa suffered upset losses against the West Indies in 1996 and New Zealand in 2011.[32] South Africa's win in the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy remains their only international tournament victory to date.

8th Match: New Zealand v South Africa at Faisalabad - Feb 20, 1996

New Zealand 177/9 (50/50 ov); South Africa 178/5 (37.3/50 ov)

South Africa won by 5 wickets (with 75 balls remaining)

Scorecard

The one thing we were damn well known for back then was HOT fielding, and it wasn’t just Jonty. Three run-outs helped us skittle the kiwis for a below par score. Symcox went for just 25 in his 10 overs. Steve Palframan was a late replacement to the squad for the injured Dave Richardson, and somehow ended up opening as well. Dunno about that one - he never played for the proteas again after the tournament.

Hansie took the man of the match award for his 78 off 64, and we had a whopping 13 overs remaining. The boys looking good and now on a hot streak of 7 consecutive wins (just klapped England 6-1 at home before this tour started)

Agree with this, i just think at No.3 we need a committed player as well. Faf can and will stand there for 50 overs if we are 3 down in 5-10 overs. RR has not yet proved himself although i hope he does well in the future, he could be a great talent.

The bowling is going to rely heavily on taking wickets, we have shown time and time again, when they get put under pressure they crack (4th ODI). Dale and Tahir are going to be pivotal if our batsmen dont post big scores.

there's a little competition on now between the Big Three bullies.

Basically australia are bossing the other two. and England and India are having a shoot out to see how is more crap between them(either that or Srini is messing with the gambling odds again).

winner takes all (to get bossed in their mini final)

india got skittled for 200 (after an opening stand of 83)

england teetering now at 70/5

14th Match: England v South Africa at Rawalpindi - Feb 25, 1996

South Africa 230 (50/50 ov); England 152 (44.3/50 ov)

South Africa won by 78 runs

Scorecard | Photo index (1)

Team looked way different back then, we just loaded it with allrounders. This team had Hansie, Big mac, pollie and kallis  - with palframan opening there was just three specialist batsmen. No White lightning for this match either but Fanie came in and did the business. No fifties, but 9 guys got into double figures, and 230 all out on the final ball was probably above par.

It was more than enough for a klap for England, who had been on the receiving end of a smashing before this tournament started. All out for 152, with four bowlers nabbing 2 wickets. Man of the match went to jonty for his 37 off 32, and he probably had a hand in one of the two run-outs (they didn’t credit fielders back then).

frog in a blender? a spinner that actually turned the ball - new vibe for the proteas

Defending champions at home, sounds daunting? Wasn’t very scary in 1992 and it didn’t put off the green machine here either. We had some very fresh talent in the bowlers here – both Shaun Pollock and Gogga Adams having made their ODI debut a month earlier (Kallis made his debut in the same match – but wasn’t always bowling). It was our standout bowler, white lightning who came in for some tap, going for over 6rpo. Aamir Sohail got a nelson century, wasim akram klapped it round at the end for a quick 30 and Inzi got his standard run out. 242 was a decent total.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/72300/72321.jpg

Hudders and kirsey were solid upfront against waqar and wasim, big mac replaced palframan as the pinch hitter at first drop – always failing. Cullinan top scored with 65 and hansie’s 45 not out got us home with 5 overs to spare.

Easy peasy.

27th Match: Netherlands v South Africa at Rawalpindi - Mar 5, 1996

South Africa 328/3 (50/50 ov); Netherlands 168/8 (50/50 ov)

South Africa won by 160 runs

Scorecard

Time for the minnows, the steamroller continued on. Lots of records broken here. An opening partnership of 180+ normally wins you the game. Kirsey would probably be a bit bleak getting out in 80s, especially since Hudders made it to 160. Highest total ever for SA at the time.

Pretty much everyone got a bowl, except for the keeper and the openers who were probably a bit moeg. They’d probably be a bit irritated they couldn’t bowl out the dutch, but otherwise a walkover and the confidence was sky high.

This gave us top spot in Group B – 5 from 5 and a run rate 0f +2, and a draw against the 4th seed from Group A – the WIndies who had only won 2 out of 5 (including an embarrassing large loss to Kenya)

A reasonable warm-up for the boys this morning.

I would have liked a full game to see whether we could absorb the pressure in the last 10 overs. We got 2 wickets just before we came off for rain and went at 8,17 per over from overs 40 until we went off for rain.

As things were, we had to chase down a revised target, something that probably suited Sri Lanka more than us. We were comfortable half way through with 116 after 15 overs, but a few quick wickets in succession and some good bowling from Herath in particular saw us chasing 10 an over towards the end.

The unlikely hero was the Vern with 13 off 6 when it was needed most. It is still early days, but if a player like the Vern can become our "20 off 10" guy, it would add a great dimension to the side.

It was nice to see us absorb some pressure and come through it with a win. In games like these you take away much more from a 3-ball win opposed to a 30-ball win.

Agree..great pressure situation before the world cup starts as we weren’t really in situations like this during the WI tour.  I think Rilee and Vern handled the pressure very well and something we really needed before the WC start.  Great confidence booster b4 the WC, just our death bowling in question now.

Rather quiet here... even Shebeen didn't comment on QDK and his 66er against the Lankans the other day.

Good to see the wicket-keeper opener looking good.

It'll also take a lotta pressure off AB

GO BLOMMETJIES
