as a matter of interest...seems the Herald Sun put the proverbial cart before the horse with their newspaper headline on the morning of the last day of the last test......

I think we are going to show up big time for the last test...Steyn and Amla to show the Ausies why they are the best in he world at the moment!

My 2 cents on Kallis....I think they should start letting him just bat.We can get 2 more good years from him that way and any team in the world would pick him as a specialist no 4.

I know it is about more than the stats but he has a very real chance to go past Ponting on the runs list and he needs 6 more hundreds to go past Tendulkar on the most hundreds. If you look at the top 3 runs scorers of all time he will be second then on the list with the highest avg of the 3 and the most hundreds!!

F&$k anybody that then don't want to pick him in their top 5 batsmen of all time...

In Fact I recon if you have not scored at least 10000 runs you should not be on any list..it is easy for a talented guy to have a good 3 years and avg 60 plus but try and score runs for over 10 years or more like Kallis,Ponting and Tendulkar.....that is what makes a great!!

I agree that he should be retained as a pure batter and give his ol' body a break from bowling.

He is also excellent as a slip catcher.

People who question it are better suited to watching that Castle crap 2020 bubble gum American cricket bollocks!! Kallis is a consummate TEST cricketer!!

As to the question of best ever this my elicit some debate but I would certainly have him in the top 3. My vote for #1 would have gone with Barry Richards...but hey!

Have to agree 100% there, if you watch interviews with older cricketers, both in SA and abroad, they are all clear and in agreement that the world was robbed of possibly witnessing one of themost talented cricketers ever to play the game.

If Barry had a full career, he would be untouchable, and could have been the closest thing to Sir Don Bradman....

Apartheid effed that up, wankers!

Also dont forget the following:-

1.) Auz are hurting and they are tired. If they dont bat first Friday it will be a catastrophe. However the only worst thing for them than not to bat Friday is to bat and be all out on day one. About time Steyn hits his straps................

2.) Auz will be chasing the game as they need to win to gain top spot. If we draw, we remain number one. So in our first innings we will not declare until we get 700 on the board...... They need to chase the game......

3.) In view of the above I really think they will rather choose a top-heavy batting side and therefore choose Elgar, McClaren and Petersen instead of Tahir and Kleinveld who dont offer too much with the bat. Imagine the Auzzies hearing we have strengthened our mid to lower order after having us 45 for 3 and then not be able to bowl us out............ This however assuming Kallis is injured. If not he should come in for Elgar.

4.) The other interesting thing is that it seemed Auz struggles to bowl to our right handers more recently....

Hopefully Amla can come off again....

every kid who played cricket used to try adopt the wide stance...and as a lefty I used to believe i was pollock! even had the Duncan Fearnley Graeme Pollock bat!

Fothers was also a good bat..but not in the same league of these gentlemen

Speaking of all rounders, I wonder if the selectors will have the guts to give Obus Pienaar a shout in the near future. At 22 he is averaging nearly 40 with the bat and 24.5 with the ball. He already as a first class double ton behind his name too.

A huge problem is that we do not get 4day domestic cricket on the tele, and I doubt whether our selectors are travelling around the country to watch every single 4 day game. There is a host of young talent that only have opportunities in warm-up games against visiting sides and in SA-A games, if selected.

Any thoughts on retaining Rudolph? He seems to be the "easy" player to leave out of the side. Alviro also seems quite average compared to the rest of the top order.

I've always liked Jacques R, but he just seems to be under performing at the moment. This could be due to him batting much lower than he usually does or that he's just not cutting it. That said, I would love for us to give a couple of youngsters a go in the Jan tests against NZ. Potential line-up:

Alviro, Smith, Amla, AB, Elgar, Faf, Q De Kok (wk), Obus Pienaar, Philander, Steyn, Morkel. Good batting line-up, great pace attack and options in terms of spinning.

Give Kallis some R&R if he needs it or bring in Phangiso if it's a turning track. We could even give one or two of the upcoming quicks a bash, specifically thinking of Machant or Hardus Viljoen. Steyn looks like he's carrying a niggle and might do with a game or two on the sidelines.

What happened to de Lange?

Seems we get some new potential, they play a game or two and then disappear. Names like Dave Rindel (who scored 169 not out against Aus at Wanderers), Marchant who bowled very well last year and a few others. Justin Kemp was another almost starter. He could hit a bal, and bowl. Played a few games and then nix.

Granted, these are all one day game starters I'm talking about.

Personally, I think this game is too important to SA for us to screw around. If Kallis is not 100% fit, then he shouldn't be in the line-up. Unless of course, we win the toss, bat for 4 days and then bowl the roo bonkers out in a couple of sessions.

So Ricky Ponting retires after Perth. I think he has gone about it quite well.

Ricky Ponting has announced his retirement from international cricket, on the eve of the third Test against South Africa in Perth.

"It's a decision I thought long and hard about, put in long consideration about the decision, at the end of the day it was about my results and my output in this series so far," Ponting said.

"It hasn't been to the level required for batsmen and players in the Australian team. My level of performance hasn't been good enough."

Following a poor start to the Test series with low scores in Brisbane and Adelaide, Ponting said he was troubled by the "tentative" manner of his dismissals. In Adelaide he was bowled twice in the same match for only the second time in a career that began in 1995.

"This is not a decision that's been made by the selectors, this a decision that has been made by me," Ponting said. "I'm glad I've got the opportunity to go out on my terms."

Ponting will play out the domestic season for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.

No pressure from the selectors then Ricky?? You sure??

It was a good career for sure and he will be remembered as one of the greats of the game. We may not all like him, but we have to respect that he was a good batsman and made many a team quail with his willow. He was without doubt a prolific run scorer.

Heck, he may even have been a good captain.

So who's going to be his replacement?

I liked the Marchant, I think that's his name.

Lanky, strong.

Yeah, wonder where he is.

He's played a test or two.

Are you not talking about Dave Callaghan who scored 169 vs New Zealand?
