I find that I can't eat anything solid while riding.

Banana is the limit, anything other than that and it comes up again in the next few mins.

I stick to Hammer and Powerbar gel's and powerbar bars.

Only take water on most races to wash it down, because gels are gross.

GU Chews bits can get stuck in your teeth, but that's the only negative for me beside the high price. Some nice flavours - like Peach Tea.

Whether its placebo or not who knows, but I been packing them this year. Here is what they claim is in them:

• Amino acids for added focus, rippin' energy and speedy recovery.

• Vitamin C + E, those mighty antioxidants that combat tissue breakdown.

• Sodium and potassium to restore electrolyte balance.

• Exclusive blend of complex and simple carbohydrates.

Ingredients:

Tapioca Syrup, Cane Sugar, Maltodextrin, Pectin, Citric Acid,

GU Amino Blend (Leucine, Valine, Histidine, Isoleucine),

GU Antioxidant Blend [Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin E (DL-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate)], Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate,

Colors Added (Purple Berry Extract), Natural Flavor, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Carnauba Wax.

Gluten-free. With ~20mg of caffeine/serving.

Not the 32Gi chews they r designed to not get stuck in the teeth, not block the airways and not melt, and swallow and digest easily ;-)

the stuff they put in gells and juice's etc , are all there for a reason ... u won't always feel they work ... or most of the time u won't realise that they work ...

Last year I tried those 'toothpaste tubes' of USN gel in a few races... aweful taste, didn't enjoy it at all - probably did give me a boost, though, and at least it was easy to take the empty tube to the finish in the back pocket of my shirt! Small gel packets? Never used them, and can't understand how so many people just throw them away along the road during a race! Please, take your s%@t home with you! Riding with 32GI chews for the past couple months - a good 'kick' for the last 30 kays or so, don't taste too bad, pretty easy to digest.

Drongo said it:

Until the manufacturers learn to package it in a fashion that even the average moron can't fathom a way to adorn the countryside with them, then those little baggies can stay on the shelf.

If you can't ride up the hill without that crap, then walk.

I agree, have you looked at the energy anyway, If i remember it is something like 100 calories which is burned of in 8 minutes while racing so can not see that they are really anything else than marketing gimmic.

I do al may 100-120 km races with one bottle and a Oats energy bar every hour.

Use a Gu with Maltodextrins ( Oxidizes at similar rates than glucose).

Avoid Galactose , Isomaltulose - Palatinose™ (32Gi) and Trehalose as it Oxidizes at lower rates than glucose.

Old science and Jeukendrup is the chief scientist for Gatorade now and he uses Isomaltulose ;-) check their products also maltodextrin oxidises at a higher rate than glucose it's a lot faster :-) USN and Biogen also both use Palatinose now ;-)

Do you perhaps have some recent case studies ?

I'm finished with all those expensive drinks and gels. I still use 32GI as part of my pre race breakfast but other than that i make my own Jeukendrup mix and buy those cheap glucogels at dischem (R3-99). Take 1 or 2 gels during race with my Jeukendrup mix (45grams in bottle). Dirt cheap and works for me.

Is the mix Agave and Rice syrup , perhaps ?
