early in my biking days i used to hear the horror stories of how brittle carbon is etc... hence why not to buy..

muuuuuuuch later many moons later i had the ardious job of having to take a seized carbon post out of an alu frame...hmmmmm was the toughest job i have had to do on any customers bike... CARBON is STRONG!!!! trying to break the post in pieces took me three days!

check out this video link of a Niner fork http://www.mbaction.com/Main/News/Extreme_Product_Testing_Niner_Drops_the_Hammer_on_4812.aspx

yeah but.... what I understand about carbon fibre is that's built for strength in certain axes, it generally snaps when facing unfathomed forces at oblique unanticipated angles

Impressive, but he does seem to be praying....

Those are very cool marketing videos, but carbon definitely breaks and when it does so its quite dramatic. Aluminium isn't perfect either. My alu Cinelli has such thin tubes that it dents with the press of a finger.

Whether we like it or not, carbon is here to stay, and with the cookie cutter moulding going on its becoming cheaper and cheaper to build as well. The main thing against carbon is its carbon footprint, if you excuse the pun. Steel frames can be bent back into shape and welded and can last many years. Once they rust to pieces they can probably be melted down and recycled further. I dont believe their is much use for old and broken carbon.

Oh.

I see someone else calls it Carbone. Or was that just a new age spelling error.

I call it Carbone, because it sounds fancier, and of course, when it does go, it generally looks and sounds like a compound fracture of the femur. :o

Bones are light, and STRONG, but man can they break!
