Is it possible to buy the lower piece (the 'crown' from what I have learnt on Google) for a fork or do I need to now buy a new headset (does it come with a headset)? I have an old fork for an frame I want to put together for a mat, it has a headset but the fork has no crown to it.

single crown forks have the crowns integral to the stanchions and the steerer tube, so in general, yuo cant get a separate crown-only replacement. Which fork is it btw?

triple clamp/dual crown forks have removable crowns, so you can get replacements for both upper and lower crowns.

Also in general, forks don't come with their own headsets. These are often aftermarket, third party items.

that's the lower headset bearing surface or crown race. The article incorrectly refers to it as 'the crown'. The crown is the black piece holding the stanchions and the steerer tube.

The crown race forms part of a headset. So all you will need is a headset. MUCH cheaper than buying a new fork :P

Think you're talking about the crown race. That can be bought separate from just about any bike shop

Thanks, will go and have a look. Do new headsets include this piece?

The fork is a RS Dart 3. The LBS must have obviously removed this when we upgraded the fork some time ago. I have been wondering why the fork was rattling around in the frame and now I know why!

 You are kidding me, right?

Talking of 'right', how did the bike respond when you said "Go Right"?

Did it kinda do a right, left, left, right, left?

EDIT: And if you are telling me that An LBS put your fork back on your bike with no crown race, then I HONESTLY BELIEVE that their NAME needs to be entered_________________ (here) <_<

Had to.

Just choked the previous one all over the office!

I remember my first argust. I was 12 or something. We drove down with this oke, and somewhere outside Bloemfontein, he stopped his van, and tried to open the boot. A million beer bottles smashed on the road later...

So we get to CT, and obviously his headset is pitted as hell, can hardly turn the bars. We ask him what's up, he claims it's an imported japanese centering device.

That was a fun trip. The one oke with us, forgot his cycling shoes in springs. Rode in his sandals. Still have a pic of me with some chick on the top of table mountain from that trip.

The bike shop had removed the crown to use on the new fork! The bike isn't all togther yet so there has been no-one riding the dodgy thing, it just felt rough and loose when I kept trying to get some preload on the bearings. I assumed the crown was actually part and parcel of the fork and was not part of the headset (if that makes senses).

Thanks to West Rand Cycles I got a second hand one that will work just fine.

Christmas will be spent putting the bike back together so a friend can do the Xterra with me in Jan.

If I caught that "mechanic" working on my fork with a screw driver and a carpenter's hammer I would definitely find another bike shop...
