Bought a second hand bike that is fitted with tubeless tyres. :)

However, front tyre went flat the other day and the tubeless fluid needs to be topped up. Not knowing what type of fluid was in there, must I clean the tube and rim before putting in new fluid?

What brand of tubeless fluid do you recommend?

How often should you top up the tubes?

Is the front tyre a full UST tyre or tubeless ready?

  1. Give it a bit of a clean, but not a full on scrub as any holes that have been sealed will be opened again if you have a good go at it.
  2. As it's tubeless there should't be a tube in it
  3. Use Stans
  4. Will say on the bottle how you need to chuck in as it's tire size dependent
  5. Top up depends on how often you "puncture". Three times a year is usually enough for me.

TLR tires need more TLC. Will lose air noticeably more than full on UST tires. Also with less reinforced sidewalls you won't be able to run the pressures as low as UST tires.

Tubeless ready.

Doh, my bad! Meant tyres, not tubes...

Thanks for input!

you get tubeless ready and you get TUBELESS ready

I use the fastraks LK from specialized

this probably sound s ridiculous but the sidewalls can seep Stans but not lose any real pressure to save a few bucks and some hassle of going to the bike shop get a little kit from the bike shop which consists of a large syringe with a tube that screws onto the valve costs about R140 and then a bottle of stans

I can usually tell when the stans is evaporated by giving it a shake but because I am a bit more precise I weigh my wheels about once a month ( sounds crazy but works a charm ) cant tell you how many people race or go on some extreme ride get a flat only to find the stans has dried up

on my 29er wheel i usually put 2-3 cups of the stans measure thats about 60 ml i think ( i know the weight of that )

so if I weigh my wheels and they are 50 grams lighter I know there is less than ...all stans in the wheel even if I can hear a bit sloshing around in the wheel

also make sure you have a few bombs with you as a bike pump is useless with Tubeless if you lose a seal

Do you know the approximate time in months that it takes for the sealant to need replacing?

I haven't done it for more than a year! Definitely can't hear anything inside my Maxxis UST tubeless.

I recently did some annual tubeless wheel maintenance, my first, to check spokes & true as well. I found that most of the Stans had conglomerated into a ball, so redid it, clean up the inside. And the yellow tape which was looking a bit dodge, so redid that as well. Also pulled out all the tips of the thorns that has made it through the tyre, as someone pointed out here, that would cause problems if one was to use a tube as an emergency repair. When I re-inflated, the holes sealed after a bit of a show.

Can I convert my Rocket Rons to tubeless?

You can, they are tubeless ready but tubeless ready tires are pretty flimsy. Youll be in the nearest LBS buying UST tires before you can say sidewall cut.

Can I convert my Rocket Rons to tubeless?

I know someone that uses these tubeless and it works very well, no sidewall cuts in a year`s riding. I use the Maxxis Ikon Exo and it is rock solid tubeless, even though not UST or Tubeless Ready - it holds air better than tubes. The only tyre I have seen that got cut badly on the trail was in fact a full UST Kenda tyre.

they dont always get sidewall cuts but can burp quite easily I gave a guy a lift home after his stans burped out at the Mast Tokai on his way down in the transition from tar to gravel

poor bugger had to walk the whole way down

the suseptible tyres are the schwalbe and the crossmarks that are not even tubeless ready as I said its usually the bead that plays up

You clearly don't see a lot of tires

Yep. I got a burp. Bumped it up and thought it held. Next small paving I went down, the tyre popped off. I still have the 3 dots on my ankle where the crank teeth bit me...

Stans is awesome but ridiculously expensive.

If you buy the 50ml single wheel applications bottle thats R39 each.

Thats R780 a liter - What kindof bullsh1t is that??

Thats like a bottle of 12yr old Single Malt but just like 5000% less work to make.

Caffe Latex is R99 for 250ml at my LBS - better value for money and works!!!

And that's all I am interested in ;)
