Not a nice New Year's surprise: got back to Jozi yesterday to discover that Northcliff Hill Louie Ave is now boomed and Joseph Ave is closed off fully. Is full road closure still possible. Anyone suggestions on how to challenge this? Hill repeats are no longer possible there for sure.

I live in a boomed suburb with some roads that are permanently closed. I know the boom operated roads are legally not allowed to make people sign-in etc.

But from a resident's point of view... I honestly wouldn't care if I messed with a few cyclists' training route in order to live in a safer neighborhood.

So think about it... is it really worth fighting this? If you lived inside that gated area would you want cyclists to try get the security removed?

Well the safety point is arguable, plus it restricts access to well known and used public spot as well. So it not 'just' a few cyclists.

I could not agree with you more. Yes, Northcliff hill is a long time favourite, but given our country and its state of violence I can see why communities will band together to make their neighbourhood safer for all who live there.

I understand the sadness of not being able to ride up a challenging hill, but I dont think it was put up to upset cyclists, just to protect families.

Beware the cyclists! Rough lot, not to be trusted, a bad element!

(Slip the security guard a rand or two. It's Gauteng after all. He'll let you through, but hide the stolen plasma screen in your saddle bag on the way out.)

That is funny! Good chuckle!

Not trying to sound contentious, or trying to be "otherwise", I just think the neighbourhood are thinking of their safety. Its not an unreasonable thing to do. I know it upsets the training routes, but many sleeping childrens safety is far more important than hill reps. Sorry guys.

If there is a boom they must let you through. It is still public roads. You may have to sign in. They will have a residents association or similar. Maybe contact them and ask for a sticker or something to allow you to cyle there without signing in.

I doubt that riding into the area will be a problem, but I foresee a whole heap of injured cyclists at the bottom of Joseph street who are doing 70km/h down the hill and don't realise that there is now a pallisade fence across the road.

They will only make that mistake once! Could also be considered as descent control training!

Seriously though, I'm sure a word with the local neighbourhood watch/security company would not be a bad idea. I'm sure some arrangement could be reached that would allow riders to use the hill.

Why bother with Northcliff. Doreen is also a killer

+1 Dorren is a killer. I would also recommend doing Hendrik Potgieter up Krugersdorp hill and then come down again and go up robert broom east direction. 1 or 2 loops of this will definitely sort you out.

I went up Frederick last Thursday into Hearn and into Louis. Noticed that they were putting up the booms. Cycled past the water tower, turned left into Joseph gave it gas and then was brought to an abrupt stop by the pallisade fencing.

I cursed all the way back up Joseph !

I did some riding there on the weekend. I reckon hill repeats are still possible with some minor route changes.

If you're coming up the Frederick, Hearn, Rockey route to the tower, the only potential change/obstacle is whether or not the let you through the boom without stopping. From the other side, depending on the route, you have to turn right on Joseph and join Rockey, instead of going left onto Joseph.

There is actually a tiny, bedraggled piece of A4 paper stuck up at each closure site, giving notice of the closure - the application number is 351.
