So i fell me in my tjops this morning at Oak Valley in Grabouw. Dont know what happened but as you can see from the pic my front wheel is a writeoff.

So firstly im really new to MTBing/Cycling and i just do this casually on weekends with some friends. I have a GT Avalanche and it still had the standard rims on.

Now i need to get myself a new set of wheels. Firstly i need a cheap option that if it is tubeless it would be awesome but i really dont have the dough to spend on a wheelset atm. My LBS suggested Mavic (not sure which) but he quoted me just below 3k and they aren't tubeless but tubeless ready (ek neem aan dit moet seker net die rim strip kry) but 3k is no where near my budget, infact i dont have a budget so i need the cheapest option that will last a while. Don't have to be new either.

Other thing to note i weigh in on around 120kg. blush.png

I am supposed to have started Argus training this week but i will steal the girlfriends no name brand rims off her bike which my LBS said should be fine for road cycle i must stay away from the curbs.huh.png

I've been checking on CRC for something cheap but i dont know what the difference between 6 bolt and centre lock is and i can't afford buying a set of wheels for 1.5k and then they dont fit...

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Dankie.

if you don't know everything about your wheels I think it is in your best interest to buy local from your LBS, you can't go in an ask them to explain everything about your wheels and what you need and then order online.

So option a) Buy from your LBS, think of the extra you are paying for as the knowledge that they are giving you.

B) Buy from CRC, get an in the know cycling buddy to come and look at your wheels so you can buy the correct wheel.

c) Buy a 2nd hand wheelset off of thehub, somewhere else. Be prepared for a shorter life-span (not much shorter unless they've been used thoroughly) and you may need to get some small parts replaced, you never know if it's been in a crash exactly like yours and just been straightened as well as possible.

Personally, I think you should buy from an LBS, CRC won't be a huge amount cheaper and you still have to pay vat and delivery. You'll also miss out on the chance to better your relationship with the LBS, assuming you bought your bike there, or start a new one if its your 1st purchase at the LBS which will result in discounts further down the line.

Hope you're ok and good luck in your quest for a wheelset.

Agree with Zac A here. If you're a noob to the MTB'ing world, buy from your LBS (William's Bike shop there in Somerset West is great and specialise more towards MTB). I have been there loads and I am 100% sure they will give you sound advice.

The other thing is that if the CRC wheels fail, it is going to be a b1tch to do warranty replacement or repairs.

Agree with discounts too - become loyal to a shop and preference discounts will start to apply.

The weight issue will limit the choice of wheelsets a little bit but I am sure there are some bullet proof wheels out there.

The other option is to google everything about wheels .. like google 6 bolt wheel set ... and read. Your best friend right now is the internet. Read as much as you can.

Go look at the disks, then look at the bolts, how many can you count ?

Do you use a quick release ?

Otherwise, you know there are several bike shops in somerset west, all within 10 min of each other. Go to a coffee shop, buy coffee for the guys in the shop and go and sit with the guys and ask all the questions in the world. The one that you find gives the most help and feels like you can get a good relationship going is where you spend your money.

Why a new wheelset, if your budget is tight, just repair it. You will be surprised as to the miracles that can be done ti bent/broken wheels. At the most, a new rim and spokes.

Assuming they quoted you for Mavic Crossrides being the entry level Mavic's, I have a brand new 2012 set for R2k (absolutely brand new, never been on a bike)... They take 6 bolt rotors (i.e. the rotors for your disc brakes will have 6 bolts which mount them on to the wheel rather than a single ring that screws in over the rotor to hold it on (have a look at your rotors, very easy to tell). If your current rotors are center lock, I have brand new Avid G3CS 160mm 6 bolt rotors I can throw in for an extra R200 (top end rotors).
