Chains: Is there really a difference?

Between HG73(LX/105) and HG93(XT/Ultegra) CN-7701(XTR/Dura Ace) is there really a difference???

Why is there such a cost difference?

Confused

Quality, weight, longevity all come to mind.

My 2c; don't waste your time on shimano chains, KMC/SRAM are as good/better and you can take them off to clean any time you like.

Dunno if they're compatible with Shimano as seems to be paulvs current groupset (assumed).

Anyway, I thought any Shimano or Campy component would spontaneously combust when combined LOL

No, I have campy gruppo on road bike and SRAM on mtb.

I am just wondering if replacing the chain with a SRAM 10 speed will be better than a campy 10 speed

there is still no real answer as to the difference between any chains... I have found that plating could be different and maybe the weight.

I tried to use a SRAM chain on a Shimano cassette (all brand new) and

the chain kept sticking when moving about 3 gears off perfect alignment.

I

then replaced the cassette with a SRAM one which is obviously different

from the shimano one in that it is missing one tooth on most of the

gears - I guess to facilitate a smoother gear change. Problem solved.

My

conclusion was that SRAM chains & Shimano cassettes don't mix.

Could have just been something that I was doing wrong though.

On vuh uvah hand darren I use the SRAM links on all my chains, shimano 9 & 10 spd included with no problems.

As for the diff between 105 & da chains - I doubt it very much.

There is no real functional difference.

More expensive chains have nickel coating to keep them more rust free.

SRAM and Shimano chains and cassettes are cross compatible.

Although Shimano/Shimano or SRAM SRAM systems shift better, I have no had major ride stopping incidents with either product recently.

In the past (about 5 yrs ago) I certainly have had issues with the lower end products cross compatibility but with higher end parts i have seldom had issues that I can relate directly to compatibility. A 9speed system is afterall a 9speed system.

SRAM ESP shifters and rear Derailleur mechanism's are of course not compatible with Shimanos system by SRAM's design. This excludes chains

I once replaced my Record chain with DA at half the price. No noticeable differance but .... I am still so ashamed of myself - scarred for life!!!! CryLOL

All chain are the same and they are made in the same way. What I really need to know, what do you with your old chains??????? What is the correct and responsible way to recycle them?????
