Yep guys

I hear Winterton has NO flattrack...

So, either saffaring uphill, or running out of revs flats and downhill.

So far, I am undecided on ratios, but will be taking all my spare cogs with.

Then, there I will have to decide, 16/17/18/19/20/21 (x32).

Gonna be a blast in every way possible

C ya all there

All I'm going to say, is that a friend of mine, who happens to be one of the fittest and strongest riders I know, is seemingly obvlivious to riding-induced pain, has been riding SS for years and for many of those years it was the only bike he owned, has ridiculous technical riding skills AND a beer-sprint that embarrasses most, rode Spioenkop last year and he says he had to get off and push. He was riding a GEARED bike at the time.

Choose your gears wisely, but more important than that, choose them with humility.

recently converted to SS, can ride 32x16 comfortably on my 29er (little bit tough on the steep hills), but think I'll probably go with 32x18 for Winterton - seeing as there will be some beer hurdles...

Where do you ride and which hills.

Is it 32x16 on a 26" or 29" ?

Sorry just saw you said 29'er.

Well you must be super strong, that is quite a big gear.

I live in Northcliff, ride over the hill and down the Spruit... and back...

I must admit there are 2 short sections where I sometimes need to jump off and run the bike up for 20m - 50m... This is only because I find the x18 frustrating on the flats... but I am used to hike-a-bike from adventure racing.

But as I said - only recently converted and still need some experience...

I might not know too much about SS. but my advice would be to pick your gear for the hills.

The flats you will spin, no matter what.

And pick it for the middle and later hills, not the first! Amazing how that "easy" gear gets a little harder after 30 odd kms :whistling:

Jeebers! Looking at the responses on this thread, I'm clearly going to be there for the beer. Currently running 32x20 on the 29er and considering a 21 for Winterton.

Hell boet, that pass on the Loteni road was enough to make me beg for a sprocket 20 teeth bigger.
