This must truly be one of the saddest days in cycling history. The man was (may I say, still is) one of the true legends of SA cycling. I was shocked to hear the news. We were actually talking about him at the Sabie classic this weekend and Fritz (Pienaar) still had lunch with Ertjies last week. It's shocking shocking shocking.

 

My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Rest in peace Ertjies.

DETAILS OF THE TRIBUTE TO ERTJIES BEZUIDENHOUT

 

1. Memorial Ride for Ertjies Bezuidenhout

 

Date: 3 March 2012

Time: 6.30 am

Place: Hoerskool Garsfontein (Jaqueline Drive, Garsfontein, Pretoria) Parking will be available in the school grounds

Route: Starting at the school in Jaqueline Drive, head towards Hans Strydom, left on Hans Strydom, down towards Lynwood, right on Lynwood, left out of Lynwood towards Boschkop, up to the T-junction and back.

There will be adequate time for cyclists to have a cup of coffee at one of the many coffee shops in the area after the ride, before the service. Cyclists can stay in their cycling gear for the service.

ALL CYCLISTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THIS RIDE ORGANISED BY VELO CYCLING CLUB.

Cyclists can paticipate in this ride either from the start or may join along the route.

 

2. Memorial Service

Date: 3 March 2012

Time: 11 am

Place: Hoerskool Garsfontein School Hall (Jaqueline Drive, Garsfontein, Pretoria)

 

Please come and join family and friends in celebrating the life of a true legend.

 

The family have requested that in lieu of flowers it would be greatly appreciated if you could make a donation to the SPCA, as Ertjies dearly loved animals.

There will be a box for donations at the service.

This will result in a plaque bearing his name being placed on the wall at the SPCA. The more money received the more stars on his plaque. The wording on the plaque will be something like:

Ertjies Bezuidenhout

South African Cycling Legend

13/10/1955 - 29/02/2012

 

The SPCA receives no subsidy from the government. The money donated will go towards paying their vets, staff and animals medication.

Hijack on : that looks like the cup they raced for at joostenberg last year??

Looking at a pic in our club newsletter of the event, the Dunlop Cup that City Cycling Club presented to David Garrett at the Klein Joostenburg race last year is about half the size of the one in the pic.
