Also my first Argus, managed a 3:31 from K. I wasn't feeling great after about 70kms (too much partying on the Friday I think  ), so had a quick stop at a WP and pushed on!! I must say, that first glimpse you get of Chappies is quite intimidating...

Great event and great weekend away, will definitely be back next year but will only start the partying after the race...

With the "6km to go" marker coming into sight and 3h29min on my clock I thought that my goal of 3h40 was definitely reachable, just needed to keep my speed at the 36km/h mark for a little longer. However, reaching the "6km to go" marker, I had to rethink my target somewhat. Both my legs completely cramped up, luckily there was no one behind me and I could pull over to the side of the road without causing a crash or pissing anybody off. At the end of the day I came in at 04:00:01 for my first argus, despite missing my target I had a great time on the road enjoying the scenery. Now I am targeting a rather crazy sounding sub3 for this year's 94.7

Been back on the bike little more than 6 months after a 16 year hiatus. The excitement was unbelievable. Started in LL and finished in 4h32. Dissapointed I didn't do a Sub 4 but happy to have made it in one piece after all the falls and the heat. Well done to everyone who achieved there goals. Need to start working on getting a better seeding next year. There was no real effort in the lower groups to work together and achieve better times. Following on the Argus groups thread maybe there should be a split between the licensed riders that regularly take part in races and the guys that dust their bikes off once a year and pay a day licence. Would make a huge difference to the rate of accidents.

second Argus and only second road race... but whoohoo the bug has me. Was aiming for sub 4h30 but came in well under 5... Thought I was getting sick cos the engine just wasn't firing in the first 20km but I think that was nerves plus heat! Was disappointed at first with my time but I'm stoked to see I came 66 in my group. Probably sounds funny, but there's hope I won't be a back-of-the-packer for ever! And how great was it to do my bit pulling the train for a bit??!?

So thanks to everyone who's kept encouraging me and answered my newbie questions! And BIG THANKS to the Hubber who sold me my bike... she's going good!

Roll on next year...

On 12 March 2011 I had a motorcycle accident - shattered my femur and started cycling in September 2011. @ Age 46, my first Argus - with a 40cm titanium prosthesis in my femur - was a celebration of the fact that: I am gratefull to be alive, I am able to cycle and that I got a second chance to appreciate life for what it is! I finished in 3:25 from group L.

First Argus. Started in PA and got a 5:36. The traffic on Chappies and muscle cramps just before Chappies and again in Houtbaai really messed with my target time, which was 4:30. Next year I will not take the Coke at the water points, and stick to clean water and my PVM mix. Too much sugar for such a hot day is not good. Hopefully will also start with an earlier seeded group to have less congested climbs.

They seem to have closed the racetec site, but results are available via the CycleTour website.

I rode with my wife and we did a 6:02 from XX! Our goal was a sub 4:30. She cramped from just after Smits and it was a struggle to get home, but she did it! I am just glad we made it safely to the finish as we saw a lot of crashes this year.
