duties on helmets are not 40%, also, you canot factor in the VAT as the agent claims the bulk of that Back, hence it is value added tax.

Duty is 35% and VAT at 14% is paid by the customer to the shop to SARS, on a R2,000 retail price VAT paid over is R246, paid by the shop and distributor to SARS. Weather the distributor claims some back or not, SARS collects R246 VAT plus at least R245 Duty out of the retail price of R2,000.

Duty does vary as freight and clearing does get included in cost for dutiable value.

Close to R500 is not included in the US price, sales tax is state specific and not included in published retail prices while there is no duty on helmets in the US.

The Rate of Exchange plays a big part as well when buying overseas. When the Rand is at 7.5 a lot of stuff looks like a good deal. Do the same calculation at 8.5 and you might as well buy local.

I shop around for the best deal, locally and in Europe and sites like CRC are not always the cheapest when you look at all the costs.

I for one believe that the Manufacturer or Agent should honour the warranty of any item bearing their brand if there is a legitimate proof of purchase and the warranty period has not expired. No matter whether it's the first , second or third owner or where it was bought.

Even if it's purchased from a parallel importer?

Of course, the cycling industry is like a mens shower, the public feel they are being ass ripped and in return can't wait for the soap to drop.

Sounds like a fair deal.

Tumbles, you have oodles of posts, when are you gonna learn that you can't put milk in to a coconut

Full finger spez glove 23 pounds... im sure they R450 or more here

Bottle cages (i think its caled "rib cage") 8 pounds..... R235 in SA

UK have import duties, taxes and VAT etc... So you cant say the difference is duty related in SA..

No matter who imported it into our Rainbow Nation. Grey, Green, Blue or Purple, doesn't matter. If the product came off the Company's Factory Floor, it carries a Warranty.Even if it's bought though the Classifieds and the seller provides a POP, the Warranty stands.

I don't see the ambiguity here.

You can buy a second hand car through the papers with a valid Motor Plan , the manufacturer would honour it?

A motor plan isn't a warranty. And you could be charged for an inspection by some manufacturers if you bought a second-hand car.

Why should grey importers get off scot-free on this? Or the overseas discounter for that matter? You conducted a transaction with them, not the official agent, so why can't you go back to your source? Too much effort? Well, there's the opportunity cost of dealing with these people. Your choice. You can't cry foul if it doesn't go your way.

With regards the ambiguity, many items' warranties state that it only applies to the original owner. Straightforward enough?

Also, in this Rainbow Nation of ours, we have the CPA which compels the parallel importer to honour a warranty against defective purchases. When it comes to buying overseas, your only recourse is to the overseas vendor. You being the "importer" carries its risks. Man up, and accept them.

Some brands keep their channel close & personal, not only to keep margins high by controlling supply but also for service & support ie warranty

So Spez, Cannondale etc you pay the price for the privilege.

Unless you are devious schemer like my good self.

It's not just opinion. Some of us have presented facts here. The local agent is under no obligation whatsoever to honour a warranty on a product they didn't import themselves. Fact.

Should they out of goodwill? No. You've shown them none. Opinion.
