Were you there? I was, Burry was anything but a clown, he rode incredibly well, was an awesome race, him and Shurter spanked the rest of the field.

I spoke to both Burry and Nuno after the race, what athletes, a true inspiration, they do not deserved to be called clowns, specially from an arm chair specialist, Burry lost time in the rock garden, and he popped half way through the penultimate lap, otherwise he came from ninth after the first lap to lead most of the race.

My comment was directly related to Burry's bike giving him the disadvantage - because of the WHEELSIZE... the "clown" reference was due to the 29er wheels, nothing to do with his capability or style or performance....

And, because i watched on TV - i saw the ENTIRE RACE... compared each line and turn and switchback and sprint and and and... you, being there, what did you ACTUALLY see?

And just for your info, my frustration with Burry is that he should have actually won the race, i think he had better fitness and should have won.

agree -was at the ampitheatre for 3 laps and if ever an example of needing to handle tight corners that would be it. Burry handled that like the pro he is. In fact this is where he took control, it was at the tree house that he lost his some ground to nino. The rest of the time i was at the tree house ad nino was insane - in fact they were all insane the way they handle those lines.

I fell asleep after the ladies event, but given his crash there last year, i wouldn't be surprised if burry lost it in the rock garden the same way Emily Batty did: lack of commitment. It's a subtle thing, but if your competitor is just a little bit faster thru the same section, it's gonna add up. Batty finally took teh initiative and took teh straight line, but she was waaaay too slow thru it. In the post race interview, Maja said she rolled the dice by staying off the brakes as much as she could in taking the 'softer', right line thru the rock garden, and it paid off in spades. Besides, Batty admitted as much.

What did burry say?

Gotta love the Hub bwahahaha... I'm going for a ride on my clown wheels now and hopefully when I get back before the DH starts there will be more action and expert advice to be read :) Keep up the good work gents.

You think it was his wheel size?

:whistling:

Great contest.

Surely last year's somersault can also play on Burry's mind...

Nope. I think it was Nino's skill level that was simply superior, as well as Burry's apprehensiveness on the rock garden that helped Nino to pull a gap at the only section he could...

There was nothing to separate them from each other, apart from that rock garden.

To quote from an excellent article called "war of the wheels" in the latest issue of Bike magazine:

"The true mountain bikers will find the tools that work for them and get on the trail while the fanatics will still be arguing about wheel size at the coffee shop"... or whatever social media platform they can find, in this case that veritable fountain of "knowledge" - the Hub

Nino bounced through that rock garden, wheels deflecting of the rocks but managing to hold his line, incredible skills it must be said. The difference to how Burry did it was perhaps marginal but significant enough to open a small gap. But Emily really slowed down and lost the race there, no matter what line she took. Wloszczowska went through will full taps - claims she didn't even brake on that last pass. But all in all excellent racing and the comments from the competitors and teams is that the increased technicality of the PMB course has raised the bar in XC racing.

Anyway enough comments from the peanut gallery - I am off to roll my 26" wheels on some single track at Van Gaalens - stunning day in Jhb.

That log section, Chaka's playground, also looked helluva steep.

Yet, did not really separate the male riders.

Many of the women racers avoided that zone.

It was the line Burry took on the penultimate lap that caused the deficit. He went left to start with. That cost him. Otherwise he had no hassles with the rocks. If it was his techincal ability, he wouldn't have stayed with Nino for so long.

simple: time them thru the rock gardens. End of speculation. Also, you dont have to have perfect technical ability to stay with someone, also, that someone would prefer not riding alone. Two sides to that debate tumbles. But if they beat u by 11sec by the end of the final lap, then yes, something is amiss: strategic, technical, physical, mental. And hesitation including wrong line thru a rockgarden can be that determining factor.

It's similar to Needles: that boy shoulda been #1 ages ago, but by his own admission time and time again, he always says something about being cautious here, and over cautious in other places. Nothing wrong with him technically, except simple hesitations.

Yeah, but he'd been taking it all day, and he wasn't as fast as some of the others through there. I know his technical ability is great, but Nino's on the day was higher. Whether that was due to a bit of apprehensiveness from Burry, or just Nino believing in himself just that much more when it came to gunning through the section.

Warner was right when he commented on Nino's seeming ease of making mincemeat of the Tree House, saying it looks as if he could go faster and faster. Just so happened that on the last lap, he went so much faster that he was able to open up the gap to such a large one.

So yeah, Burry had the tech ability to do the Tree House, but Nino's tech ability (and confidence) on the day was just that much better.

I prefer when it's put that way!
