Conversation I had with rider 2630 at the start of the 30km;

me: hey buddy... you dropped something

2630 : 'yeah'

me: you dropped your packet

2630 : it is empty

me: so you drop it on the ground?

2630: yes it is finished

me: do you do that at home as well?

2630: yes

me: well, why don't i pick it up for you and put in my backpocket ?

Did anyone notice this reply? Jy moes vir hom 'n sakkie bene gegee het!

I got 33km for the shorter route, one of the flattest MTB races iv'e done with only the 1 climb, non technical so those looking for something more challenging would be disappointed. Route markings were easy enough to follow and plenty of space to overtake which was nice as i started right at the back and had to work my way up.

Pizza and beer after the race finished off a good morning.

That's exactly when we realised how short the race was going to be and started riding at a 60km pace rather than an 80km pace - bit late though. We had a 4hr ride in mind but came in well below 3 hours.

Ja, I just kept hoping that the 12km sign to go was meant for the shorter route. Guess I got that one very wrong ;-)

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/168334692 For those who got lost  .....this is (was) the correct route....

The link doesn't seem to work for me... (No permission it says even though I'm logged in.)

Have you ever tried www.strava.com ? I suggest having a look at it as is a great way of riding certain sections of a route competitively regardless of when you do it. It produces a leaderboard of every such section and who has achieved what times etc. (There are many competitive sections all over JHB, and you can create your own. The site runs in a similar way to facebook and also seems to have all the other features of Garmin Connect.)

Try this link for yesterdays race: Route 42 80km race (short-changed)

Team-mate wasn't 100% so also did the shorty, and was actually cool just having a bit of fun! (Been very serious of late)

Flattest route on the calendar I reckon! Just couldn't catch that front bunch (bleddie laaites). haha.

Fast and dusty .Soft sand took out a few riders .Saw a rider flat on his back at about 10minutes from start. So where does the suiker bosrand feature in all this .The route did not even cross the highway .Is there a real suikerbosrand MTB race?Liked the race thou

OK, I'll qualify my statement by admitting that I did not do the race....but as someone who lives, rides and explores in the iarea I agree that adding Suikerbosrand to the name is a misnomer. There are more interesting opportunities available than pottering about the plotte.

Well I enjoyed it, had lots of energy and improved on my 2010 time and overall placement. Rode with a strong group in the centre of the race, one master with a handlebar moustache was really strong, and another very tall guy on a SantaCruz tallboy too.

I thought the gel wrappers littering the route was quite a poor show, especially from the 18 guys who finished ahead of me.

Very dusty but good training, route markings could improve. Happy with the 2nd on the Strava 'Route 42 climb' haha.

I had a great race and enjoyed it a lot.

Unfortunately I lost the leading bunch when there was a pile up in some sand, coming off the tar road after the bridge. Still got a great result. I thought the route marking was excellent, and the vibe good too.

Haha. Mr DN, you've given away your identity. ;-) And just 28 seconds away from the KOM title, if you can call it a mountain...

I created the segment, but bummed I'm sitting second to last on it. This is why I want more slow guys to use the application!!!
