I was just having a browse on Bidorbuy and checking the price on some of the bikes there. I have 3 words "Lu di cris!"

Check this:

2004 Trek MTB with a starting bid of R3900!

1994 Cannondale MTB for R4000! (I reckon this guy used his cigarette roller which he advertises on the same page for rolling something a bit stronger than tabacco!)

A piece of *(&^* ladies MTB for just under R3000.

What are these guys thinking! Bizarre.

If they manage to sell them at those prices, then the price was right. If you're selling to a broad and ignorant market, then you can overcharge.

I personally don't think it's ethical, though.

There are those that do try their luck but also prices have dropped (ok maybe not Songo's Specailzed on auction) so what they think is a fair price for what they paid you can get better new.

This is why, as opposed to the regular advice given on here, I'll rather buy brand new old models from a dealer rather than browse for second hand "bargains". Every seller is out to make as much as he possibly can, obviously, but this will often mean an inflated price and an exaggeration of the "exceptional" condition the bike is in or the "limited" mileage it has done. New at least you know is new and you can easily compare prices to other new bikes of the same model.

Have a look at "The Hub" and see the prices Pornstar tries to charge people for his 2nd hand stuff... and his new stuff

For self-branded blank carbon those prices are a bit steep yeah

Well don't buy one then... Although I would dig to have a 94 cannondale, they cost R4000 new bback then. I used to dream of owning one

Look, you're right. The problem is, some poor schmuck thinks wow, bargain and buys it. Ok, maybe the seller is also a schmuck who is selling his bike at what he THINKS is a fair price. He bought the thing in 2004 for R5000, so he figures a reduction of R1100 for 8 years is reasonable.

You see it on the hub too where guys ask too much for a 2nd hand bike. To my mind, a bike drops maybe 25% off its retail price the moment it becomes 2nd hand and then drops maybe another 20%, 15%, 10% etc over the next few years (assuming "standard" wear and tear). So a 3 year old bike that was purchased for R20000 is worth no more than around R8000 - R10000. Doesn't matter if it is in "mint" condition. The technology moves on, and warranties etc have expired.

Too steep for my liking for a blank just sprayed. You can get those frames for R3-4K on ebay

Not forgetting it can also be fraudsters trying to make a quick buck. I've also seen guys trying to sell 2nd hand bikes at new prices crazy

The problem also is nobody wants a top carbon 26 inch anymore and alot of guys dont know how these bikes depreciate. I saw a guy I think yesterday trying to sell a 2010 scott spark 30 (the three shape back one) with SLX crank for R23 000 now that guy might think he can almost get what he paid for it.

Buying anything second hand has its dangers. Its up to you, the buyer, to do your homework and ensure that you pay a fair value. If the seller has a ridiculous price and someone pays it, who is the stupid one?
