Hi There,

I have built a tallboy with full XTR groupset including brakes.

There is too much play before the brakes work, ie you have to pull the levers in at least half way before there is any resistance or brakes, make no mistake the breaking power is awesome. The new brakes dont have any adjustment to take out the slack, only to adjust the resting position of the lever out and in?

I come from Formula R1 brakes which were awesome.

Can you take out most of this slack by adding more oil?

I like the brakes to activate almost as you pull the levers, not after the levers have been pulled down to your knuckles?

No Bite point adjustment???

Seems that you have XTR race brakes and not the XTR trail brakes which would have the feature you are looking for.

XTR Trail has tool free reach-adjust and free stroke adjustment.

XTR Race has none of the above as its lighter.

In bleeding them, it's suprising how little additional oil is required to restore the lever take up point to your prefered position. Conversely, it's suprising how a few tiny bubbles retained in the system can do the opposite.

It would be interesting to know why you moved from Formula R1 brakes to XTR, the Formula R1 is claimed to be the best brakes, very light with enormous brake power.

I'm interested in this topic because I have the same issue.

I ordered a pair of the XTR race brakes from CRC but they made a mistake and sent me one race and one trail.

I find the trail one can be adjusted to bite at the right time, but the race one does seem to bite unacceptably late. As dodger said, the braking power is flipping good.

I have bled both brakes twice, taking the greatest care to eliminate bubbles and have as much oil in as possible but it doesn't seem to have helped. I have just had to get used to the way the brakes work, and it doesn't bother me that much anymore. That said, I would not recommend the race brakes. The extra weight of the trail is negligible.

Also interest I have a pair of the race version on order, but can still change to the trail if needs be. What is the verdict go with the trail or save a few grams and go with the race?
