it all depends on your tire size. I use about half what is recommended and it works, but less than that could be asking for trouble. I also replace it about every 2 to 3 months or when I do a major clean on the bike.

That is fine. just need to use the recommended amount then. But it is a good idea to replaces it ever year. You will find a nice ball in the wheel of fibers building up. Sometimes it makes a star.

So full dose if I leave it in for a long time and half dose if I change it often?

Technically, you dont need sealant when using a UST tire on a UST rim. The tire bead and rim are specially designed to seal properly without assistance from sealant.

Furthermore, sealant is only mandated for UST rims when using tubeless ready tires because with those tyres, only the bead is UST compliant, but the rest of the tyre isnt wrt porosity and through-wall leakage of air. Hence the need for sealant to plug those pores. This is why UST tires are heavier than tubeless ready tires because with the former, the rubber is thicker to prevent thru-wall loss of air.

Practically, it's as everyone's been ragging u for: sealant is useful for minor punctures so the ride is mostly uninterrupted.

Since you a shameless weightweeny, maybe try tubeless ready tyres on a UST rim, but using Sealant. Works for plenty of us.

I can't see how the UST will seat on the rim if there is no sealant in the the first place.

Sealant is there to stop punctures NOT to seal the rim. UST rims with UST tire does not require sealant it will sear 100%

How long is long? If have 1 day old sealant and you use a CO2 canister you have too replace it that day ?

Niner: it seems to depend upon the sealant used: some react quicker to the CO2 and hardens faster.Shake the wheel and if you can still hear the sealant sloshing about, you probably good2go still.

That is the butter zone....do it

Remember as well you probably have had a few punctures (thorns) and did even notice the sealant work. Alot of thorns break off and leave the sharp part still in the tyre.

Running tubeless without sealant is a bad idea. You dont really want to get a puncture with UST since its much harder to open up the tyre and put in a tube than with a regular tyre. Especially in a race this is the last thing you want to be struggeling with.

That seems to be the general feeling here. Thanks.

It's like insurance premiums dude - you only know it's value when you need it

After ojne winter ride I landed up pulling 9 devil thorns out of my tires when I got home .........each one would have been a flat - evidence the white Stan's dot after pulling - thank you Oh Great God of Sealants

Don't leave home with out sealant - my 50c worth !

When I bought my first mtb, I rode around the block and a bit offroad next to a river. About a 5 minute ride, and I got 7 (seven) punctures and thought I'd end up hating the sport if that's what it was like.

Best result I've had ever is XT tubeless wheels with sealant, with or without tubeless tyres (currently with). Runs down slower than my tubed road bike. Not one ride-ending issue ever, if anything it's a 10-second pump, but I actually can't remember needing to pump it up.

It does not, UST on UST rims, no sealant need to seal.....

true that the bead just pops into place shazam!...with no sealant.

but i would rather use the sealant than muck about fixing a flat. and changing a flat on a ust with a ust tire is not that hard.
