I was just wandering if there are any odometer type devices that can be used for swimming to measure how far one has been swimming? Someone mentioned that in the ironman swim they saw that they swam much further, how does one see how far you've actually been

GPS under your swim cap, not sure if the Garmin forerunners are able to measure the distance but most I know use the GPS under the swim cap method.

The Forerunner should measure the distance under the cap reasonably accurately, but on the arm it is inaccurate due to arm movements/strokes, and also prone to loss as it gets wacked in the washing machine.

Tie a string to your foot then measure it off with a ruler when you get back? / just remember to divide it by 2 because you swimming back with slack?

Any waterproof GPS device, preferably under your swimcap. Garmin 310 works better under the cap, 910 better on the arm due to the accelerometer.

In the pool, Swimovate or Swimsense or 910XT will do your lapcounts, stroke counts, Efficiency Index nd SWOLF for you.

and incidentally, I also measured a MUCH longer distance for the IMSA swim this year...

I normally swim to the point where the water is shallow enough to walk out of the water. Never been bothered with the distance as it normally is too far to my liking

Dont you just hate it when training in a pool, specialy a 25m.... trying to keep count of the lengths. Hell even in the gym i'm useless at keeping count of reps....

Attention deficit....aahhhmm... what were i saying...

That what sweets are there for ;) Place about 200 jelly tots and chow one for every lap.

PS. I don't do that but i heard one of my mate does it.

I count in 10s...10 normal freestyle...10 with a noodle between my legs...10 with a board and then repeat about 3 times. I get bored, so i need to mix things up a bit...plus it does help to keep track of number of laps.

Ok, back on topic.
